The XIII Amendment to the Constitution of the United States is ratified. Hereditary chattel slavery is outlawed throughout the country.

Soon to be replaced by universal public slavery with the passage of the XVI Amendment.

On this date in 1889, Jefferson Davis died.

Without secession and the Civil War, slavery would have continued much longer in the United States.

Evidently December 6, 1889, was also the day that Mark Twain's novel A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court was published. Did Twain's book cause Jeff Davis' death?

Mark Twain very briefly served in a Confederate unit.
