The latest symptom of a broken supply chain could take away your breakfast. The looming possibility of a cream cheese shortage is affecting Massachusetts, especially at restaurants. Perry Makarios, the owner of SPoT! Bagel in Norwood, said the restaurant usually goes through 1,500 pounds of the stuff in an average week. He said his suppliers recently began giving him unfilled orders.
"Every week we were ordering our cream cheese block, and it was short 200 pounds, short 300 pounds, short 500 pounds, so finally one week I just said, 'we don't have any,'" Makarios said.
Consumption of cream cheese across the United States was already rising in the last several years. Makarios said when he scrambled to find another distributor for cream cheese, they were charging 40% more for the same product.
He said his customers have been okay switching over to breakfast sandwiches, and he's grateful for the business, but it's hard to run the store this way. Despite the ubiquity of cream cheese in his shop, Makarios said bagel stores aren't even the worst hit.
"The majority of the cream cheese in the United States is not used on bagels, it's used for crab rangoons. So the Chinese food restaurants are going crazy," he said. Makarios is starting to hoard his supplies until further notice.

Ham and cheese on a bagel... that’s a jewish dilemma.
Butter and jelly is a decent substitute.
“The majority of the cream cheese in the United States is not used on bagels, it’s used for crab rangoons”
BS!!
yeah, “cream cheese jelly”
For several months I have noticed there is no cream cheese with onion and chives at my local QFC store. I like to put a blob of it into my scrambled eggs. All the cream cheese has been in low stock but it is the worst with the one with the chives.
Millions of holiday poo poo platters are in jeopardy!!
I’m an onion and chive guy.
My world has been shaken to its core...
Hmm. I got one in my fridge. What am I bid?
seriously good: cream cheese, raspberry preserves and chipotle adobo all mixed together as a smear...
trust me
:)
I aint hard to make, got milk?
A bagel isn’t worth it without Philadelphia cream cheese.
I don’t eat bagels much anymore due to my lower carb lifestyle but I do like a good bagel. I never use cream cheese thought. I used to toast them and make sandwiches with canned salmon.
I’m pretty sure lox with dairy on there ala cream cheese is not kosher either
Weird considering that’s a dish as Jewish as chicken schmaltz is not scrutinized more for being off the rules for the observant
Ok lox is ok if it’s kashrut
But serious rabbis.....payot adorned sorts.....say no it’s not ok period
This is one the Jews who would make great litigators squirm around to rationalize it to the self righteous
We Christians do that too
“We’re engaged now so it’s ok to move in together”
The mind has its own will lol
“”The majority of the cream cheese in the United States is not used on bagels, it’s used for crab rangoons.”
yeah, right ... what a total pile of bullshite ...
the whole article is complete nonsense ... cream cheese is manufactured in the U.S., made from FRESH milk from U.S. cows in U.S. dairies ...
carbs are not good for you but toasted bagels and sour cream are worth it
Dairies are short of labor, and everywhere is short of truck drivers.
Oy! Such a problem! This supply chain thing is mishegas! The cream cheese you’re out of? This means no crab rangoons??
