Not in the US, we are swimming in corn and grains.

If we stopped exporting food we would not know what to do with it all.

US is also different in that we have single family homes with large back yards to grow crops unlike Europe/Japan etc who live in apartments.

Farm to home and backyard gardens are making a huge comeback driven by milennials who are really into it.

Burpee Seed Co sold out of seeds the last two years due to demand for home gardens.

~~~
Most people have no idea how to can, preserve, dry, smoke, salt, pickle, etc, although I doubt there is any greater motivator than necessity. The problem is that in many US zones your harvest only in several months out of a year for the majority of crops
This is true. I live in Pennsylvania, the Land of Plenty.
Just in case, I am fattening up my two cats. 🙀
This works until normal growing conditions change. If there is a famine because of drought or pests or extreme weather events (e.g., derecho), what makes you think it won't effect us in the US? Seems to me, the threat of drought in California is already a huge threat to our food supply. If there's no water for farmers, there's no water for my backyard garden either.
Do people really think they can grow enough food in a backyard garden to feed their families for an extended period of time? And if there are actual food shortages, do they plan on guarding it 24/7 if their property isn’t fenced off?
You really think all those backyards have soil that can grow food?
