'Significant' flaws: Partially built Beltway 8 Bridge over Houston Ship Channel will be demolished due to design errors

Harris County commissioners voted Tuesday to demolish and rebuild parts of the under-construction Beltway 8 bridge over the Houston Ship Channel after the original designs were found to have "significant" flaws. The setback will cost the county $291 million, including $50 million to demolish some sections that have already been built, according to the Houston Chronicle's Dug Begley.

Work on the new Beltway 8 Bridge began in 2018, the same year another FIGG-constructed bridge collapsed near Florida International University in Miami, killing six people and putting the company's practices into question.

COWI determined that there were 21 different "significant" design flaws, which halted construction work altogether.

"It would have led to failure of the bridge."

Don't expect a grand explosion to bring down the existing structures. Crews will systematically demolish the towers and build new, stronger ones in their place.

Reminds me of Asimov’s “Foundation” novels where the declining Galactic Empire still had enough technicians to maintain their spaceships and nuclear reactors, but they couldn’t build new ones of the same quality anymore.

—”Uh, I think it might have been a good idea to review the designs before construction.”

That, and just what triggered the design review so late into the project?

For the curious, a noncriminal error was discovered late in the process by a student, many articles/videos on this building:

” In this video we get to hear Diane’s version of the story and how she learned about the repairs and how her work contributed to saving this important structure. This is truly an amazing story and it is awesome that we get to hear it from the person that lived it.”

This video is from Prof Tyler Ley with a CV about a yard long.

—”. Somebody, an engineer for sure, reviewed the FIGG contract proposal and signed off on it. Who dat?”

This project would have been reviewed by more than a few inside the original design firm, third-party consultants, and the County building dept.

"And who pays for this mess?"

Simpler question: Who doesn't pay for this mess?

The old line, if you need to ask who is paying; look in a mirror.
