“Old headlines from Pearl Harbor attack”
Not to make light of the events of December 7th, 1941. I made too many trips to and past the Arizona Memorial to not understand the suffering and heroism of that day in our History.
But, this is a True story:
Early March 1969. Just graduated from Sub School in Groton, CT and had a week’s leave in Oregon.
We land in Honolulu on a MAC from Travis at about 2 on a Sunday morning.
We get a ride to the Sub Base in Pearl Harbor, check in and crash in the barracks.
About 8:30 am, (my buddy and I) awake to the sound of planes buzzing the barracks.
We go over to the window and see Japanese Zeros heading directly for us with flashes coming out of their gun ports.
We run screaming like little girls shouting, “WE’RE BEING ATTACKED”, and dive under our bunks.
The guy in the next bunk rolls over and, sleepily, mumbles, “Dumb a$$e$. They’re filming a movie. Go back to sleep.”
Later, we find out they’re filming “Tora, Tora, Tora.”
And so ends another of the embarrassing episodes in the life of Larry - Moe and Curly.
great story...
