Those are some very encouraging actual numbers out of South Africa, where the Omicron variant is already the dominant strain in Johannesburg.
They indicate that Omicron is a (much) less deadly strain, than the other variants of concern. The word mild is used a lot.
Clearly, Omicron is the fastest spreading variant yet, displacing former champion Delta in only two weeks, around Johannesburg.
If Omicron produces the same kind of strong, durable immunity against re-infection by COVID-19 as the other variants, it will likely bring a much more rapid end to the COVID-19 outbreaks, all around the world - much more safely than any of the former major strains.
