No its from Joe Dirt.
no worries
“More valuable than gold?”
More valuable “to science”.
Everybody’s right, sort of. The meteorite weighs just about 600 avoirdupois ounces, true, but if you want to compare it to ounces of gold, you need to convert to troy weight at 31.1 grams per troy ounce, so the thing weighs 546.6 troy ounces, or 45.5 troy pounds.
Little wonder that there have been only 17 meteorites “discovered” in Victoria. Confiscation isn’t a very good incentive for people to turn them in.
Not sure carbon dating the rock is appropriate. Carbon dating is usually done on once living things.
I’ve dated a few rocks myself................
He should have tried a Hole saw.
We should study this material and then use it to make stuff!.................
Already been done, see post #15. I remember seeing that wrench at OMSI in the 60s, when OMSI was still up above Canyon Road by the zoo. As I recall, the wrench had been forged from a nickel-iron meteorite, to use in repairing a remote sawmill.
OMSI was great back then. My parents used to dump some of us there for a few hours at a time, sort of like almost-free babysitting. Lots of cool stuff, like the bathysphere, the periscope, the Gravitram, the lamb with two heads (and three tails and five legs), the Foucault pendulum, the Invisible Woman, and on and on.
Legend has it that the ORIGINAL BOWIE KNIFE used by Jim Bowie was made with iron from a meteorite!.............
I had heard that too, also about various legendary swords.
“OMSI was great back then.”
Sure was.
I loved the pendulum...
A buddy of mine and I would play the par-3 golf course next-door and always bring plenty of extra balls to ‘pelt’ the Planetarium with!
I remember one of my brothers doing that. And then there were all the great beer-drinking spots in Washington Park and the Arboretum, especially around the old zoo.
I miss the Portland of 50-60 years ago, but it’s gone.
Yup.
Pity. It was fun back then...
Merry Christmas!
And a Merry Christmas to you and yours.
