Those hoping to snag a Dungeness crab for their Thanksgiving table may find them in short supply this year, after the commercial crabbing season was delayed again in parts of California over concerns for the endangered humpback whales that share their waters...

Meanwhile, environmental advocates have called for stronger regulations to be enforced statewide and urged the crabbing industry to transition to ropeless gear....

number one, I want to see bodies, number two, gps doesn't transmit underwater and number three, do you 'acoustically' transmit sound 160 feet through noisy waters without harming the same wildlife, to a pot that may have drifted so you don't know where it's at?

This is from Wikipedia, a unarguably Leftist source.

What does setting crab pots have to do with whales? The crabs are not very deep, not like shrimp anyway. 30-60 feet. Whales I am thinking need and prefer it considerably deeper.

Maybe, with your considerable knowledge of cetaceans and your extensive experience in crabbing, you should offer your services to the EPA?

British Columbia is up there by Glacier Bay and Washington state and that’s where argueably the ‘best’ crabs come from. A shorter season means higher prices for “One of the most popular items on BC seafood menus “ :)

British Columbia hasn't been appreciably British in a long time, if ever. I don't think people in Manchester really know about British Columbia. I mean, Chimole isn't British food just because it's from British Honduras.

We used to catch a lot of blue crabs off Jekyll Island.

I don't think any of us had heard of Dungeness crabs at that time.

I like crab legs but not enough to pay the current price. Snow crab, or if you prefer opies, legs are $17.50/lb and Kings are 2-3X more.

I should do that, and have done a lot of crabbing and shrimping both. The crab pots you could pull up by hand, being set at 60’ max. The Shrimp pots, we had to rig up a motorized winch with a lawn mower engine. If you used the electric downrigger it would lose shrimp. We set those pots commonly over 200’.
