Richardson didn’t look ready to play QB and blew a game, though.
I think the firing boils down to recruiting and personality. He’s just a, pardon my French, turd. People will ignore a lot when you win but he wasn’t doing that.
Because Mullen threw him to the wolves instead of properly preparing him.
His lack of control of his players was on display with the shoe incident at LSU. This has been a long time coming.
I was onboard with Mullen until LSU last year.
And if he’d just beaten South Carolina and Missouri and not given up 52 against Samford I might have said to give him another year, but after these last three games, it was quite clear that this was not going to be fixed.
Here’s another reason why Mullen had to go...

Guy didn’t even know the rules for recruiting. I think the University could have fired him for cause for that, and may have been able to save some money on the buyout.
It's the exact same with Leach, a coach I really like. But he can wear out his welcome pretty quickly if he doesn't win.
Div. I football will probably end up with 5 premier teams...from power 5 conferences only.
...and the rest...(Gilligan's Island reference).
What OSU did to a so-called #7 MSU yesterday was one of the worst bloodletting's I've ever seen in my 50+ years(49-0 at the half?)...like watching the bad news bears 10 year olds vs. the chicago bears...it was that bad. OSU could have easily dropped 100...if they wanted to TOTALLY embarrass beyond what they did.
(better re-think that 10 year/$95M offer MSU made to their coach this week...second highest behind Satan, err, Saban... my cat could have prepared better)
The talent level wasn't even close, at any position, particularly the line of scrimmage(as Michigan will no doubt find out for themselves next Saturday...their annual exposure as pretenders and "the leaders..."... at being 2nd best..at best).
While most folks are probably picking the winner of the SEC championship game to come out on top in the end...I can easily see OSU giving either(Georgia/Alabama) a run for the trophy.
...if they bring that kind of performance to the CFP, they can beat anybody.
Omg, must you remind me of that debacle, where Florida snatched defeat from the jaws of victory?
It’s gonna be tough for Dan, but $6 mil up front and a $ mil a year for 6 years should buy a few drinks to drown his sorrows.
The Buckeyes have improved from early in the season, especially Stroud. I enjoyed watching Oregon go down to the Utes. The Utes had fire in their bellies the whole game.
I think the Missouri coach trolling him was the last straw.

Yup. I saw that “may the force be with you”. lol
Last year’s darth vader came back & bit him in the butt pretty quick
Thank goodness. We need to bring in a guy who recruits far better than Mullen. UF is a relatively easy job. Just keep the top in state talent at home. That’s it. It’s ridiculous that out of state interlopers have been allowed to poach the top talent in recent years.
Ummmm McElwain won the SEC East in each of his first two years. He was fired in year 3.
Florida and Texas have this problem.
They want to pay the big money for coaches, but there are so few coaches worth that money, so they overpay for mediocre coaches.
It would be better if they went with maybe a more unproven, younger coach for less money, but it is hard to justify to the fan base that they are being “cheap” with the coach.
We were pretty bad in 2016, even if others in the SEC East were worse. We won some nailbiters that year and still got blown out in the title game. Maybe I was partially conflating him with Muschamp, but maybe I’m one of those impatient fans.
