Dan Mullen's tenure at Florida is over.
Florida made Mullen's firing official on Sunday afternoon after multiple outlets — including Yahoo Sports' Pete Thamel — reported that the coach was getting fired. Florida lost 24-23 to Missouri in overtime to drop to 5-6 on Saturday. Florida plays Florida State — also 5-6 — with bowl eligibility on the line in the final week of the regular season.

This is partially a reaction of how they kept McElwain much too long once it was clear he wasn’t getting it done.
Florida, the University of Texas, Washington, USC, and some other schools used to be great jobs. They are now places where coaching careers go to die.
Every game is on TV now so players can get exposure at any school.
Dan's problem is his huge ego. He feels like he's the best best coach in the country, and won't take any criticism. Another is that he would go job-shopping every year after losing the Alabama game. This cost us several Egg Bowls, where Mullen would send the kids home Thanksgiving week while Ole Miss would practice.
Mississippi State tolerated this. A big-time power like Florida doesn't. Gator-fan demands recruiting 24/7, getting the top 10-12 players in the State every year, beating Georgia, and contending for National Championships.
Mullen would do well to go to a football program with a blue-collar ethic like TCU or Virginia Tech.
When Matt Corral rejected Mullen, that was the first Red Flag.
Yep.
+1
I listened to an old Jim Rome interview with the coach at Navy. Tells listeners he’s proud to be the coach of these patriotic kids, and you could hear in his voice how much he loves the player like they were his own children. He knows and they understood they will never make millions in the NFL and put their lives on the line serving on a carrier or battleship for the remainder of their service.
*** But they must level set the fanbase’s expectations.***
Gator fans expectations will ALWAYS be pretty high. It comes with the territory and it always has. They’ve done well enough to let Mullen have a few years before firing him.
Gotta learn to beat the big rivals every year, first, then do well in the conference too. So FS-who and Georgia are must wins, IMHO. When the HC can deliver those two teams reliably, they’re off to a good start.
Of course the irony here is the NY Jets interviewed Mullen for their head coaching position because of his experience developing QB’s.
Also, after four years, that’s enough time to find out what a coach really is, and eventually Mullen did get exposed.
Wow Florida, Miami and Florida State are experiencing hard times. Not nearly as bad as Nebraska. You guys have me sympathies.

Are you a Notre Dame fan? 😉
I saw that....pay back can be brutal.
As a VT fan I wouldn’t mind Mullen. This has been a tough stretch for Florida but he was 34-15 at Florida. Not bad.
Ha!
He’s such an unlikable ass. That is fine if you win but he wasn’t even close this year and there was no sign of improvement.
He handled the QB situation with Jones and Richardson horribly. Most likely at least one if not both are going to transfer.
I accept we’re not Bama or even UGA right now. If we go 9-3 or 8-4 every year, that’s ok. But this was just ridiculous going back to the shoe throw game last year.
