> Regardless of property rights, or any other rights, stupidity should be called out. That’s what the first amendment is all about, which is another conservative value. <
The First Amendment is meant to protect you against government retaliation. It is not meant to protect you while on private property.
For example, you can stand on a public sidewalk and hold a “Biden is an idiot” sign all day long. No police officer or city employee can legally move you. You are protected by the 1A .
But if you go on private property, the 1A does not apply. The property owner can trespass you just for holding that sign. And if you don’t go, you can be legally arrested.
You’re missing the point entirely.
I can be physically removed from a privately owned store - nobody is arguing that - but as long as I’m there, I can say what I want.
If a store owner is acting stupidly, the shoppers can tell him so, and express anger while doing so.
Then, if the shop owner has those shoppers removed, he will be proving their point.
But let’s give a more striking example. Let’s say passengers aboard a privately owned ferry crossing Lake Michigan begin a load and angry protest over the owner’s stupidity.
Can the owner silence them? Can the owner throw them in the brig? No. The most he can do is complete the journey and then refuse to do business with them in the future.
Property ownership has no bearing on the right to free speech.
