And the only effect the Carter boycott had was to deny many innocent athletes their lifetime goal. Made zero difference to the Russians or anyone else. Most countries were glad we didn’t show because their chances for medals improved dramatically in our absence.

As in the headline, it is a “diplomatic” proposal. Has nothing to do with athletes. So really, it has no teeth and is basically invisible.

Nope. The Carter boycott was an ACTUAL boycott, it stated that NOBODY from the United States would participate in the Soviet-hosted Olympics in ANY way. The U.S. sat out the entire Olympics and did not take part in the games.
The Biden "boycott" is a token gesture that doesn't change a damn thing or in any stop Americans from participating in the commie olmypics. He's just threatening to have politicians not show up in their "official role" to WATCH the games (and apparently they can still show up on TV in "UNOFFICIAL" capacity, I guess while "on vacation" in civilian clothes?), and chances are they won't even stick with that level of toothless "boycott". As another FReeper noted, its one step up from sending China a "strongly worded letter" telling them we "disapprove" of their actions. Remember during the last commie China olympics, a bunch of "western leaders" threatened to "not attend" the pointless opening ceremony (but NOT withdraw from the games or events THEMSELVES, cuz you know, that would have taken and spine and would have been an ACTUAL boycott), and then worthless "leaders" like Sarkozy didn't even stick with the token "opening ceremonies boycott" and showed up anyway.
