Son of former Libyan ruler Gaddafi runs for president [Libya]

While Gaddafi is likely to play on nostalgia for the era before the 2011 uprising that swept his father from power and ushered in a decade of chaos and violence, analysts say he may not prove to be a front runner.

The Gaddafi era is still remembered by many Libyans as one of harsh autocracy, while Saif al-Islam and other former regime figures have been out of power for so long they may find it difficult to mobilise as much support as major rivals.

However, after his announcement, Gaddafi supporters demonstrated in his hometown of Sirte, and in Bani Walid, a former Gaddafi stronghold.

Educated at the London School of Economics and a fluent English speaker, Saif al-Islam was once seen by many governments as the acceptable, Western-friendly face of Libya, and a possible heir apparent.

But when a rebellion broke out in 2011 against Muammar Gaddafi's long rule, Saif al-Islam immediately chose family and clan loyalties over his many friendships in the West, telling Reuters television: "We fight here in Libya; we die here in Libya."

Will he contribute to the Clinton fund to keep from being killed like his father? Or is The Godmother too far from power to have him wacked too?

Just don’t anybody mention Bengazi, where “people did things with other people.”

Vote in Libya? We should install him first. They have oil. The revenue would help stabilize the country. Does he hate us? Educated. He knows the difference between da Bushes and Hillary.

We had no self interest in toppling khadaffy. He may have been a dictator but we didn’t hear a peep out of him after Reagan bombed his palace.

He happened to be sleeping outside in a tent that night but it must have made an impression on him, watching it happened and knowing there was nothing he could do to stop it.

He knows the difference between da Bushes and Hillary.

And what is that, exactly?

Da Bushes and Hillary's friends are one and the same. They are all fingers on the hand of Sauron. Not a dime's worth of difference.

'Deep State' are not just pretty words.

Seif was his father’s liaison with the Islamists and Muslim Brotherhood. Muamar drove most of them into exile. The few that remained met with Seif on occasion. He was always considered the most logical and realistic member of the ruling family. He has backing from his tribe and from the Sufi tariqas and despite his name would appear to be the most responsible leader Libya could hope for.

Momar was a quirky dude, but he posed no threat beyond his boundary. Reagan gave him a spank when he tried to claim too much water. He, like Saddam, Assad, Mubarak, kept the crazies in check. Hillary set them free.

I think Seif is the only person to unite the three distinct regions of Libya: Cyrenica, Tripolitania and Sebha. Otherwise, let the regions go their separate ways.

I think Seif is the only person to unite the three distinct regions of Libya*Ok so we install him. BTW Rand is my hero-he’d disagree.

*Momar was a quirky dude, but he posed no threat beyond his boundary.* I agree but you’re forgetting Lockerbie.

Lockerbie was in 1988,and to this day some thirty years later appears to be a rogue operation carried out by Libyan intel officers to curry Muamar’s favor. Seif had nothing to do with it. Reagan chastised Qadafi in the Gulf of Sidra, and his political fortunes were in a downhill trajectory ever after. You will recall that he soon closed twenty terrorist training camps and then even gave up his atomic weaponry and WMD programs. You are right that Qadafi was no saint. But he was killed in the so-called Arab Spring because Hillary Clinton and friends felt that Libyan economy was ripe for the plucking. The result has been utter chaos. I say it is possible that Seif can unite Libya. Certainly, the Islamists can’t.
