I read once that the network told them that WKRP needed more laughs so have more jokes. So they decided to stick it to the network by making what they considered the dumbest possible episode, fighting mascots in the mens room and all. Surely the networks would see that theirs was not a show that suited that sort of humour.
Unfortunately it was frigging hilarious and the public loved it so the network said 'That's what we were talking about! More of that please!'
