Roger Daltrey Calls Rolling Stones a ‘Mediocre Pub Band’
UltimateClassicRock ^ | November 3, 2021 | Martin Kielty

Who frontman Roger Daltrey described the Rolling Stones as a "mediocre pub band" in a recent interview.

His comments follow those of Paul McCartney, who reignited the Beatles-vs.-Stones argument when he called Mick Jagger's group a "covers band" — leading to a lighthearted response from Jagger during a concert.

In conversation with the Coda Collection, Daltrey offered his own views, saying: "Mick Jagger, you've got to take your hat off to him. He's the number one rock 'n' roll performer." He continued with a laugh: "But as a band, if you were outside a pub and you heard that music coming out of a pub some night, you'd think, 'Well, that's a mediocre pub band!'"

Elsewhere in the interview, Daltrey revealed his envy toward Robert Plant, whose experience fronting Led Zeppelin was very different from Daltrey's own experience fronting the Who. “I managed to get the short straw of all the singers in all the bands," he reflected. "No solos! Who songs are all lyrics. Robert Plant — Percy, as we call him — he's a very good friend of mine, and we do joke about it. He said you could go off and read a book when [Jimmy] Page started up on a guitar solo or [John] Bonham stated on a drum solo. And I suddenly thought, 'I wonder what it would have been like being in a band like that!'"

Daltrey also said he was a "hater of the internet," explaining: "I never thought any good would come of it, and I still don't think anything good's come of it. I think if we're not careful it's probably the end of our civilization."

As I get older, I also appreciate the Beatles more and find I listen to them quite a bit.

I soured on the Beatles over 40 years ago. I heard them on the radio so much I got sick of them, specially Paul McCartney and his post Beatles music.

Keith also wanted Steve Marriott, I can understand why Mick would nix that idea.

The Who can dismiss anybody they want. There's no rock band ever who could tear it up like this:

Young Man's Blues

IMO they’re a mediocre blues band but a great rock band.

Right there with you... Add in the Beatles to that. Never understood the attraction.

I kind of like Undercover of the Night. I also liked the Still Life live album, and they had a couple of songs after that time that I can still listen to. None of them would make a Rolling Stones top 30 list, but they added some quality depth to the catalog.

Yeah - I can’t stand all the screaming in Angie, Wild Horses, Sister Morphine, pretty much all of them. /sarc

List Jagger’s worst screamers? Keep in mind Bob Dylan wasn’t really known or appreciated for dulcet tones ...

Great song. You rock. :-)

And for what it is worth, “Hand of Fate” is perhaps the Stones most overlooked song.

Yes and
- I read it last night on YouTube
- He cited it as the reason he left
- I gotta think Roger pinched Mick’s comment

Hey, nobody said the marketed consumer groups had good taste in music... but back when they was fab and all of that... ad agencies were churning out the maniacal knick-knacks, clothes, posters, comic books... a total boom. With a fledgling Japan and no Chinese swamping the markets. It was the space age! Asia was just waking up.

I’m glad our family was living kind of rudimentary in up country Thailand and I wasn’t really exposed to a lot of the scene back in the states. Especially the late 60s BS. No TV and only shortwave radio for news and other international broadcasts.

Who’s Next is one of the best albums ever. Rolling Stones Let it Bleed was their best IMHO.

"One problem is the Stones are a guitar band with mediocre guitarists. They haven’t produced a decent guitar solo since Mick Taylor left. I think one factor beyond the effects of drug abuse is they have a real loose attitude and just don’t care"

“I love how they decided to do The Guess Who’s “Shakin’ All Over”, because they got tired of people confusing the two bands, so they figured why not just go ahead and cover one of their songs”

Actually the Guess Who were covering “Shaking” as well as the Who. It was written by Johnny Kidd, of Johnny Kidd and the Pirates, UK band.

Well, I picked from among their biggest hits, rather than their more obscure songs, so people knew what I was referencing AND to make the point even their “best” songs were bar-band trash.
But at least I can say is I can identify what made Brown Sugar popular. As opposed to Miss You. God, that song could make you long for Nickelback!

So many of the rich and famous are pervs, I hesitate defending ANYONE, but come on... the guy told the police why he was going to do what he did BEFOREHAND, and his previous works about child abuse make his motives entirely plausible. If this was some habit that had he had evolved, why tell the police THIS time?

Rolling Stones Beggars Banquet was their best. Let I bleed and Sticky Fingers were next best.

When they went into glam rock I lost interest.

I dunno. Every song on “Tommy” works as it was supposed to work. They’re not all fist-pumping rock songs: You can’t put it on auto-shuffle for a party, because “Uncle Ernie” might come on and convince every last soul that you’re a dangerous, perverted freak. But they wanted creepy, they got creepy.

I don’t know of a Rolling Stones album where more than two or three songs are really worth having... but then again, every time I tried to listen through an entire album of theirs, I couldn’t finish it, and I gave up trying before I finished their collection.

Now, honest truth: I was a kid in the late 70s/early 80s, when Rolling Stones songs weren’t just meh, but were God-awful terrible. God help me, I don’t say this lightly, but I would rather hear Nickelback’s Photograph a hundred times than listen to Miss You once. They also took forever to write their first good song (yes, Satisfaction), But I did go through a phase, much to old, when I was hearing all their late 60s music and saying “OK, THIS is a really, really good song”, “OK, Now THIS is a really, really, really good song.”

Agree! Miss You was lame. They thought they had a cool slow to moderate tempo groove, but it didn't work. Then there is Jagger talking through the chorus - ack. Their earlier blues covers were much better.
