Please remember that the spelling of words was very much in flux when the US broke away from England. Webster's Dictionary was published in the early 19th century and it differed from contemporary English dictionaries. And many people considered spelling to be "best guess" until around the mid 19th century. Add to it that many words in English are words borrowed from other languages. Lastly, many letters are silent when pronounced (Just look at how Americans pronounce aluminum versus how the British pronounce it). Compile all of this together and it is a wonder that the two are as close as they are.
