Oscar-winner Leonardo DiCaprio is in final talks to play religious cult leader Jim Jones in MGM’s upcoming feature written by Scott Rosenberg, Variety has confirmed.
Known as the leader of the Peoples Temple religious group, Jones was behind the November 1978 mass suicide at his Jonestown settlement that took more than 900 lives. Jones and his inner circle orchestrated the massacre at the jungle commune in Guyana, with the followers directed to drink cyanide-adulterated punch.
MGM secured a deal for the feature project in a preemptive situation, with DiCaprio also producing the project alongside Jennifer Davisson for their Appian Way production company. Rosenberg (“Venom,” “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” and “Jumanji: The Next Level”) is also on board as an executive producer. Rosenberg is represented by WME.
ounded in 2001 by DiCaprio, Appian Way Productions produced Alejandro Iñárritu’s three-time Academy Award-winner “The Revenant,” Martin Scorsese’s Academy Award-nominated “The Wolf of Wall Street,” the Academy Award-nominated “The Aviator” and “Shutter Island” (all starring DiCaprio), as well as the Peabody Award-winning documentary “Sea of Shadows,” Scott Cooper’s “Out of the Furnace” and George Clooney’s “The Ides of March,” among others. Appian currently is in production on Apple’s “Shining Girls,” starring Elizabeth Moss. Davisson serves as president of production.
DiCaprio next stars opposite Jennifer Lawrence in Adam McKay’s “Don’t Look Up” for Netflix and in Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” for Apple Originals Films. Over the course of his prolific career, the actor has played a host of historical figures, including infamous con man Frank Abagnale in “Catch Me If You Can,” Howard Hughes in “The Aviator” and frontiersman Hugh Glass in “The Revenant,” for which he earned the best actor Oscar in 2016 (he’s been nominated a total of seven times). DiCaprio is repped by LBI Entertainment and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush, Kaller & Gellman.
Deadline was first to report news of DiCaprio’s involvement in the project.
They best not get alec baldwin anywhere near the set, he might use real cyanide.
Leo seems like an unlikely Jim Jones, but he was an unlikely Howard Hughes and an unlikely Jay Gatsby. The little guy has his faults, but you can’t say he doesn’t take on challenges.
You can bet he was a Trump supporter.
Newsweek has been pretty schizophrenic lately. They've had several stories that, ahem, seemed to be critical of liberalism. The magazine's opinion editor, Batya Ungar-Sargon, is running around giving interviews on CNN claiming woke media is destroying democracy.
I dunno what to think of 'em anymore.
Rumor has it that the main sticking point hindering production is how to blame that Guyana thing on Trump.
Powers Booth was da man
Are they going to leave out the fact that he was a murderous, atheist, Soviet communist? Like the MSM did even did when I was growing up? They NEVER touched on that. Just called them a “religious cult”.
I just wish that they would release the movie about one of America’s first serial killers... Dr. H. Holmes and the Chicago World’s Fair. Simply chilling... I think that it has already been filmed but stayed in the can for nearly 10 years...
I bet the socialism aspect won't get mentioned.
Jim Jones was a Marxist. I wonder if they’ll sweep that under the rug. He was a big admirer of Mao. Pals with some pretty big name Democrats, too.
Great book, as are most of Larson's.
Great book…Larson is awesome.
.
It’s interesting.
I don't know. There's a few photos of bodies lying face up but not many.
It would've seemed a huge task for the few security people who killed themselves last to reposition the bodies, particularly with all the chaos going on.
From what I've read, it took the adults about 20-30 minutes to die. Their children died quicker, so many parents watched their own kids die first. Many people were forcibly injected with the drug cocktail, of which cyanide was just one part. There's also speculation that the lunch they ate earlier was laced with sedatives.
There were "dry runs" previously where people drank what they thought was poison and waited to die, only to be told later that it wasn't poison, just practice. Some people thought this was another dry run, until people around them started dropping dead.
Really, a crazy story and I'd like to learn more about now that I'm older. I was nine years old when it happened and still remember it pretty well, particularly the photos taken from the air of all the bodies lying everywhere.
Yes and sitting Congresswoman Jackie Speier was Congressman Ryan’s aide, she was gun down at the airport with him but survived. I believe Willie Brown was Jones’s friend and we know who his squeeze was.
A number of the dead left wills giving everything to the USSR. In fact, escaping to the Soviet Union was one of their end-times plans before they just decided to comment "revolutionary suicide" as Jones termed it.
Come my children and take the vaccine....
Dude, now you got me running over to Parks and Rec to check out eyes and craziness while a guy whacks his balls off in a pile of bat guano. shakes head
