The case for ranked-choice voting, open primaries, and third parties. Plus: Dave Chappelle, cryptocurrency, Critical Race Theory, the metaverse, Elon Musk, and more.
Andrew Yang is the most upbeat politician I have ever met. I am also fairly convinced he is a masochist.
First, he decided to run for president of the United States. He lost. Then he decided to run to become mayor of New York City. He lost again. A normal person might consider a career shift.
Not Yang. In October he announced that he was leaving the Democratic Party and embarking on another herculean task: the formation of a new third party called Forward. (His new book has the same name.)
I sat down with Andrew last week and asked him to convince me why a third party was a good idea. And also: why he thinks Democrats just lost in Virginia; whether the outrage about critical race theory is justified; the brouhaha over Dave Chappelle; why he thinks Mark Cuban would be a great presidential candidate; and much more.
Agree with him or disagree with him about the efficacy of third parties, or his signature issues (ranked-choice voting, open primaries, and universal basic income), what’s clear about Andrew Yang is that he is actually trying to fix things.
I loved talking to Andrew. You can listen to our whole conversation here, or read the some of the highlights from our conversation below:

Clearly, the war ship has sailed.
We’ve been in a civil war for decades.
Fascinating article but he loses me on ranked choice voting.
and on universal basic income.
The Pilgrims tried a variety of that, until the first winter killed off half of them. The survivors insisted on work.
As long as he takes votes away form the democrats I am all for his 3rd party.
In 2019 he spouted out the same hatred toward Trump voters as the rest. Forget it.
If we have to go “left” I want Yang’s version and not Biden-Clinton-Pelosi-Newsom-Schumer’s .
It author is clearly delusional. And Yang is Marxist scum.
The Israelis formed a party called forward (Kadima). The founder was Ariel Sharon, but Ehud Olmert won the Prime Minister as Kadima, and it had other stalwarts like Shimon Peres (many old retired, liberal Generals, etc.)
Hr dhows his marxism when he calls his new party and his book "FORWARD".
Libtard disguised as a centrist......
Me too, and on open primaries, the government doesn't set the rules for private organizations - unless they are exclusively male.
Oh yes, we are, in effect, giving a UBI right now. How's that working out for us.
He's a nut.
Weiss, along with Matt Taibbi and Glenn Greenwald, and maybe a few others are in the very small "liberals I like" club.
“Clearly, the war ship has sailed. We’ve been in a civil war for decades.”
When I attended my first ‘Teach-In’ at ESU, and they discussed and planned their violent revolution here, it was obvious, even decades ago, that this bunch intended to take over in a Communist mold. At the time, we had just got past all of the Leftist and media ‘outrage’ at the FBI and other agencies having informants in domestic terror groups, so these ‘Revolutionary’ groups could operate openly without being worried about informants or arrests.
And nothing has changed today, other than some small groups who are trying to stop them...but with half of their members being informants, and no ‘outrage’ at all.
I promise the formation of a new party
A third party, the Wild Party!

Ihave heard that Bari Weiss has a great podcast several times. I may need to check it out.
Can be made to sound good.
In practice, it is terrible. Very difficult to monitor, hard for people to figure out.
It doe not allow clear choices.
I watched it in Australia and New Zealand.
It gives even more power to the Media, in my opinion.
I would never want it for the USA.
