Sea Otters Vaccinated for COVID-19 at the Monterey Bay Aquarium

The sea otters who call the Monterey Bay Aquarium home are rolling up their invisible sleeves to receive their COVID-19 vaccine.

No sea otters at the Monterey Bay Aquarium have tested positive for COVID. However, a group of Asian small-clawed otters at Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta all tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, back in April 2021. The aquarium says the animals all showed symptoms, including sneezing, runny noses, lethargy and coughing.

There have also been deadly outbreaks among minks, who are cousins of the sea otter.

Dr. Michael Murray, who is the Jane Dunaway Director of Veterinary Services at the aquarium, says the vaccine is different than the human dose. It was donated to the aquarium by animal drug company Zoetis.

"I felt based on the information I had that it was safe for sea otters and most likely effective. They had a lot of data in very, very close cousins, i.e. the mink, that it was a safe vaccine, that it was efficacious," said Dr. Murray.

Southern sea otters are listed as a threatened species, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium has been working to help protect the species since 1984.

KION's Lisa Principi will have more on the otter vaccination program tonight at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.

A coworker of mine took his dog to the veterinarian for teeth cleaning and nails trimmed under sedation. When he picked up the dog he noticed the dog was vaccinated for covid on the paperwork.

He went ballistic and demanded to know how they could do this. They told him that like rabies vaccination that they are now required by the state and county to provide and document covid vaccination in digs and cats.

I don’t know about sea otters, but I understand that some river otters can get up to about six feet long and a gang of them can take on jaguars. Also, I believe honey Badgers and otters are both part of the mustelidae family.

So next, they are going to be sending teams out into the wilds to vaccinate all the wild otters and minks. Right?

Gotta get them 100% vaxxed, with boosters every 3 months, before we can end the lockdown.

Can Liberals get any dumber. No, I think not. They have hit rock bottom. They may get more dangerous, but they can’t get any dumber than they currently are.
