The ‘Can Opener Bridge’ is a railroad bridge in Durham, North Carolina. It has a clearance of 11 feet 8 inches, which is too low for many modern trucks. Signs have been put up to warn large trucks to detour away from the underpass.
This video shows what happens when trucks ignore that warning.
That bridge was designed specifically to keep people from Puerto Rico from reaching the beach. BWAHAHAHAHA!
That’s nuthin, ours got hit twice yesterday.
Looks like one of them there racist bridges Buttigieg was talking about.
It’s been raised to 12’-4”. But it’s still fun to watch.
Another damned racist bridge?
This is an old article. I think they have raised that bridge by now.
Famous rock music story. Iggy and the Stooges driver drove their taller truck under a short railroad bridge in May 1971 at 35 mph and ripped the top off, causing a lot of injury damage.

It’s still destroying trucks of ignorant drivers. There are overheight warnings for over a mile before the bridge, including sensors with bright lighted warning signs.
Someone has a webcam and posts these videos regularly. Lots of drivers or rental trucks coming back with convertibles..
In MA we call that getting storrowed….happens frequently on Storrow Drive,
..
I was just telling someone the other day about the time a on Storrow Drive a truck realized at the very last second he wasn’t going to fit, I was two cars behind him, and we actually were able to get him backed up and off to the bypass lane before gridlock ensued.
My hometown has its version of the can opener, only 4” higher, that catches an occasional vehicle.
You were lucky .

Bridges in NYS are marked one foot lower than they really are. So a bridge marked 12’6” is actually 13’6”. That took some getting used to when I traveled through NYS.
Oh, if an overpass is marked 12’6”EXACT then a truck will peel the top right off going under it.
NYS, second only to California in terms of idiocy.
The sign said clearance to the 12 foot line, but those chickens were stacked to 13.9
The bridge cam also picked up the gas explosion on N. Duke Street back in 2019. The explosion was about a block and a half away behind the camera.
The people running the bridgecam are up to maybe 175 different hits. Our office was next to the bridge and we watched them put an I-Beam up 10 feet out from the bridge to keep drivers from doing anymore damage to the bridge itself. No sooner did they put the lids on the pant cans, load up and drive off... along came the next victim maybe 10 minutes after they left.
Based on my 1st hand observations at the time, they probably should have posted the warnings in Spanish. Just saying...
