“Good question. Most phones have GPS.”

We were out on the boat one day fishing, lost sight of land, high noon. Which way is the inlet? My girl goes on her phone and says HOME.

” The text message/SMS uses considerably less battery power”

They are also more likely to get through in a low reception area.

This still doesn’t rise to the level of stupid of the tourists from Mass who come to Maine and call 911 because they’re lost in the corn maze (with their children). Within hearing of the highway. On a farm where people live.

Nah, we old Rangers never get lost. We can, however, be struck with “severe terrain bewilderment”.

A hint: You should always know your “bounding box”. Those are unmistakable terrain elements like roads, rivers and streams, mountain ridges, and so on. If you move in a known direction that encounters any edge of that box, you can figure out your position or how to move back to the intended location or path. That is a flawless and always workable fallback.

Back in the ‘70s our City Attorney went hiking in a canyon on one of the islands — Hawaii, I think. He never was seen again.

Looking at a map is the best way. Observe the bounds as you pass by them during travel. It is actually very easy. It is important to choose features that do not abruptly change directions; and, edges must eventually intersect.
