Nah, we old Rangers never get lost. We can, however, be struck with “severe terrain bewilderment”.
A hint: You should always know your “bounding box”. Those are unmistakable terrain elements like roads, rivers and streams, mountain ridges, and so on. If you move in a known direction that encounters any edge of that box, you can figure out your position or how to move back to the intended location or path. That is a flawless and always workable fallback.

Looking at a map is the best way. Observe the bounds as you pass by them during travel. It is actually very easy. It is important to choose features that do not abruptly change directions; and, edges must eventually intersect.
