The Pilgrims were founded under a commune / socialism arrangement and most of them died or were in the process of dying from starvation.

I thought that was Jamestown. I recalled the Pilgrims mainly suffered from a tough winter.

The Pilgrims about starved under their own socialism.

Strange that they came to be free and thought to yoke themselves to mediocrity right away.

People want to govern their own footsteps.

It was both. There was a very bad winter, but also the pilgrims initially were more collectivist. Everybody had to help build all the homes, do the planting and all the other work that had to be done to build the village. As expected, some did not work as hard as others and so it was eventually changed.

The “Pilgrims” were comprised of 2 separate groups. There were those who left for religious freedom and the other group were considered the “strangers” who were there to maybe become wealthy.
