Over the past six decades, the 007 franchise has put its stamp on cinema like no other movie run of films. Arriving in the midst of the Cold War, it invented and continued to define the Hollywood action movie. There were groovy gadgets, sensational set pieces, luscious locales, sinister seductresses, venomous villains, and, of course, Bond…James Bond as the straw that stirs the drink (a vodka martini shaken not stirred, naturally).
During that time, only six men have played the British superspy, and each brought their own unique interpretation to the role—often for good, occasionally for ill. Now on the eve of the franchise’s 25th installment, Daniel Craig’s final 007 outing No Time To Die, Esquire went back and ranked the entire series from worst to best.
So sit back, grab a cocktail (you know which kind…), and see if your opinion lines up with ours.

All the rest of them kinda fall into place.
Someone found that car in storage and they sold it for a half million dollars
1. Goldfinger (pure genius, great Pussy)
2. You only live twice (Nancy Sinatra’s opening worth the price of admission; and it gets even better after that).
Beyond those 2, any ranking is fine w/ me.
Exactly!
ML/NJ
Yeah. I tried to like Quantum of Solice but, to be honest, I spent most of my brain cells trying to figure out the title and there were few left to enjoy the movie properly. 😜
On a side note, that hotel they blew up in the end is a real place with an interesting story.
I kind of agree with you (I’d still consider Connery the star), although it could very well be a generational thing.
I saw it at the theater as a young teenager and came away totally impressed. Today’s yutes likely wouldn’t share that opinion.
The film was the complete package, starting with the unforgettable Shirley Bassey theme song.
No Time To Die bomb.
They killed James Bond....
That is so stupid!
Like killing James T Kirk!
Another franchise wrecked.
I remember seeing Goldfinger at the drive in with my Mom, Dad and sister! They’d start off with a Deputy Dog and Tom & Jerry cartoon while we played on the playground right in front of the screen.
After cartoons my Dad would get me, we’d go to the concession stand and get greasy egg roles. My Mom’s favorite. That was America!
Bond movies are known for their exotic, sophisticated locations like Monte Carlo, the Swiss Alps and Carribean islands. Which Bond movie's exciting conclusion takes place in Kentucky
1. Goldfinger (1964)
Even serious Bond fans will strain themselves going through the movies and forget where Ft. Knox is.
I’m glad to see TSWLM get some cred. Definitely the best Moore Bond movie, and a great turnaround for the series.
I think “Never say never again” was a remake of Thunderball.
In my opinion, Terry Hatcher’s appearance alone should have moved “Tomorrow Never Dies” up at least three spots... :-)
All of the Roger Moore’s should be mixed at the bottom of the list with the Pierce Brosnan’s.
Sir Roger’s for treating Bond like the Saint (and Moneyraker, er, Moonraker, should be in a class all of its own), and Pierce’s for the terrible story lines and gadgets.
They’re real and fabulous...
Dang it. Screwed up the line. They’re real, and they’re spectacular...
I’m dating myself, but I was 12 or 13 when I saw Goldfinger in the theatres. I was hooked. I wanted to be like Bond. Suave, debonair, mysterious and dangerous. Enjoy the good things in life without regret. Since then I have seen all the Bond flicks, good and bad.
Even television back then got into Bond. Remember “Beverly Hillbillies” and Jethro Bodine thought he was “Ought Ought Seven” and retrofitted the family truck? Good times indeed.
No one is better than Connery and the old school effects.
But, there’s no way that Dalton and Lazenby are better than Brosnan and definitely not better than Daniel Craig.
Let’s fight about it....
Either works...
My husband seems to think they are going to use that movie to introduce a politically correct 007. If that happens no more Bond for him- and he’s British!!
