The dramatic shooting attack sent tourists scrambling for cover at the resort of Puerto Morelos, just south of Cancun.
The two suspected drug dealers killed Thursday had apparently arrived at the beach in front of the Azul Beach Resort and the Hyatt Ziva Riviera Cancun earlier in the day, claiming it was now their territory.
“About 15 people arrived on the beach [by boat] to assassinate two men who had showed up saying they were the new dealers in the area,” the head prosecutor of Quintana Roo state, Oscar Montes de Oca, told the Radio Formula station.
Guests at the Hyatt Ziva Riviera Cancun posted videos and photos of tourists hiding or nervously milling in the lobby and hallways of hotels during the incident.
Guests at the nearby Azul Beach Resort also posted videos of people taking shelter or gathering in the lobby. An employee who answered the phone at the hotel said the shooting occurred on the beach near the facility.

Just a tip for anyone thinking of going to Mexico for vacation; Gulf Shores, Alabama and Pensacola Beach, Florida, have absolutely beautiful beaches, tons of places to stay, great restaurants, and are not REAL expensive. Just don’t forget to leave when you’re through with vacation. Your chances of getting shot or kidnapped are greatly reduced.
“Someone begged to differ.”
Yeah, the gang that currently “owns” that territory
Sounds like a good ol’ fashioned gang fight.
In 1983, we spent 15 minutes in Juarez. (We’d seen enough).
I’ve stayed at the Azul. I missed the show, darnit.
Useful phrase: "Officer, may I pay my fine to you now?" The mordida was usually reasonable.
Yeah, in the 80’s used to go to Tijuana, Rosarito Beach, Ensenada, Puerto Nuevo and Califia without a care. Loved Baja. Looking back, well, it was a lot of fun and I am glad I was able to experience it. I would never step into Mexico now.
I go about once every six weeks. Guadalajara. Never had a problem, locals very polite and friendly. Food is awesome. Beer is cheap.
In the late ‘80s I was a travel agent. A student couple came in and wanted a South American Air Pass. The female student was American and had traveled South America before. The male student was a Scandinavian exchange student, very blond and fair skinned.
When they returned, they gave me an account of their travels all over South America. Their most memorable experience of the trip was being robbed and threatened with broken bottles twice within four hours on the famous Copacabana beach in Rio.
Nice clean hit compared to the others. I’m having second thoughts about that time-share in Cancun...
