The dramatic shooting attack sent tourists scrambling for cover at the resort of Puerto Morelos, just south of Cancun.
The two suspected drug dealers killed Thursday had apparently arrived at the beach in front of the Azul Beach Resort and the Hyatt Ziva Riviera Cancun earlier in the day, claiming it was now their territory.
“About 15 people arrived on the beach [by boat] to assassinate two men who had showed up saying they were the new dealers in the area,” the head prosecutor of Quintana Roo state, Oscar Montes de Oca, told the Radio Formula station.
Guests at the Hyatt Ziva Riviera Cancun posted videos and photos of tourists hiding or nervously milling in the lobby and hallways of hotels during the incident.
Guests at the nearby Azul Beach Resort also posted videos of people taking shelter or gathering in the lobby. An employee who answered the phone at the hotel said the shooting occurred on the beach near the facility.

Just to clarify, this was a beach in Mexico,
NOT Mexico Beach, Florida...
Agree. But I prefer the Singaporean method of a clinical good old fashioned hanging away from the tourists.
Some tourists got a culturally authentic experience.
I lived in Mexico City and Cuernavaca in the sixties and even then we lived behind ten foot walls with broken glass on top. My father had a chauffeur who was actually carrying heat for protection. We never, ever walked the streets alone. Years ago my wife and I vacationed in the Riviera Maya but I’ll never go back to any part of Mexico again, too dangerous.
we just drove across the bridge....immediately accosted by some scammer who would "show" us all the good spots to go...well we followed him a little bit, and he wanted to be paid like $20...we gave him $8....
we got out alive....
and at another time, with another couple, we took the shuttle over from El Paso, and ate and drank at a little spot just outside some kind of market. Little kids with drugged out eyes would go table to table selling chicklets. on the way back, we got off the shuttle to go inside a grocery store to see if we could get a good price on liquor.
nothing at all happened to us but when I see the violence in Mexico especially Juarez, I'm glad I'm alive to remember.
There is a PGA tour golf tournament right now at Mayakoba which I think is near Cancun. Is Mayakoba anywhere near where these murders just happened?
Interesting thought. Per Google Maps Mayakoba is 34km, 34 minutes down the coast
I remember when my Dad was pulled over by a local cop between Mexico City and Cuernavaca. My Dad had put some pesos in his wallet where his license was and the cop took the money gave him back his wallet and we were on our way!
Another time, going through customs from the States through Laredo, he had some industrial diamonds in his suitcase for the company he was working for. So, he put a small AM/FM radio (this is during the sixties) in the suitcase, inspections took the radio and we were on our way!
That’s how life was back then.
But were they wearing masks?
When my father was working in the city of Campinas, Brazil near São Paulo, we were told not to wear any visible jewelry upon getting off the airplane as little kids would look for items they could rob. This was during the seventies, things are much worse.
