Tom Waits -- Love him or you hate him. The first time I heard this song, I had to know who it was:

Cold Cold Ground -- Tom Waits

I heard it on a TV show: Homicide Life on the Street. It was 1993, I was not internet savvy back then, the show credits gave no clue. The next week, I watched the credits more closely and jotted down the name of the "Music Director". Took some digging, but I got her number and called her, only to leave a message.

No return. Few days later I tried again and got a hold of her.

'Yeah, I know the song you mean. Tom Waits. Don't know what Album. (click)

Bitch

Could not find it after several searches at multiple record stores.

Called her again. By this time she was irritated with me.

"Look, I gave you the name of the song and the artist. Perhaps if you just relaxed, it will happen. And if it doesn't, well maybe it wasn't meant to be."

liberal bitch...........

A week later I drove past a record shop. Went to the "Used Albums" and then to the W's. Second Tom Waits record was: "Franks Wild years"

Track 15: Cold Cold Ground

I've been a fan ever since

Saw him a couple of times years ago. An acquired taste imho. But I enjoy him.

Him and Townes always caught my ear. Not sure why. I suppose I dig the songs.

Have a cat named Townes, for the sake of the song. The little bastard sings us awake every morning at 5:30 a.m. to go potty.

I met Townes Van Zandt at Poor David’s Pub back in ‘94. He smelled like the road. I swore to God that night that I would never ever live like that. Seemed to be a shitty life, and I am right.

Met Waits once and he was a dickhead. I know why...

The road will kill you...

At the door sat Tom Waits
In a pork pie hat and silver skates
Jugglin’ three collection plates Jesus Christ
Townes Van Zandt standin’ at the bar
Skinnin’ a Hollywood movie star
Can’t remember where he parked his car
Or to whom he lost the keys
Full of angst and hillbilly haiku
What’s a poor Ft. Worth boy to do
Go on rhyme somethin’ for em’ man
Show him how you really feel
