I have been in many Waffle Houses in the Southeast and even out to Tulsa. Atlanta, the home of WH is where I experienced the very worst WH cookery anywhere.

In the South, people get creative with names. "Candy" has not been an exclusive girls name.

"Candy" Cummings is credited with inventing the curveball while playing for the Brooklyn Excelsiors.

The TV character "Candy" Canady was a ranch foreman on Bonanza.

Italians sometimes use what anglos consider to be exclusively girls' names. So, "Sally's Apizza" in New Haven was founded by Salvatore Consiglio.

Why do I have a feeling all these are just nicknames? Both derivative and descriptive.

What counts is the real name. Sal is obviously Salvatore is plainly Sally.

A true example supposedly, would be Ashley. Thought of as girl but apparently mostly boy back long ago (though frankly I’ve seen little evidence).

In the case of Marion, it’s only a homonym. For girls it’s Marian.

Also still used pretty frequently, except almost always hidden by nickname, is Francis. Vs Frances.
