The South China Sea has been an area of considerable interest for a long time. I’m surprised that there could still be an uncharted seamount. Unless it is awfully close to the mainland, as in territorial waters.

At least we know the root cause of the accident now.

That was a quick decision. Fired the leadership of the USS Connecticut after it collided with a Seamount that even the U.S. Navy admitted was an uncharted seamount.
If its uncharted how the hell was the navigator supposed to know what hidden hazards were going to be in the vessels path?

U.S.S. Connecticut? Seamount? They should call it “doing a Lamont”.

I’m a landlubber, but wouldn’t this boat have sonar and other aids to be able to detect objects in their path?
To: DFG
It may have not been the accident itself but conduct after.

This old Army guy knows *nothing* about the Navy. But I'm wondering if mankind knows *everything* about the world's oceans. If that part of the ocean is “uncharted” why would the Captain be responsible for hitting that “seamount”?

Remember, WWII submarines were ineffective until a new breed of rash, almost dangerous, commanders took them over.
So maybe these guys were incompetent. Or maybe they were were too aggressive for our woke navy. The problem is few of us trust the military’s judgement anymore.

Hmmm… they relieved the chief sonar tech also? I thought they usually try to run silent (without sonar) most of the time.

A nuclear attack submarine runs into an undersea mountain? If they can't detect a mountain, how the hell are they going to find a little submarine?
