They were running silent. They could detect if they were running active sonar.

The entire ocean floor is mapped. This can only be gross incompetence piloting the sub or as other players have suggested, china created a new mound on the ocean floor there.

I wonder if the Navy charts for that area are accurate?

In 1908 Ensign Chester Nimitz grounded USS Decatur DD5 on a sandbar in Manila harbor. The sand bar was not on the Navy’s charts. He was court-martialed, found guilty of neglect of duty and issued a written reprimand. Two years later he was promoted to Lieutenant.

So would that be a “known unknown” or a “regular unknown”?

Did they get to name it before being fired? Also has someone now charted it?

Subs rarely use active sonar, it would give away their position. They have to rely on passive sonar and accurate maps for navigation.

There was an incident in the South Pacific some years ago where another boat rammed into the side of an underwater mountain; the speed at which the boat was going resulted in a sailor being thrown against a bulkhead with sufficient force to cost him his life.2005, USS San Francisco, SSN 711. Google ship name and see the tremendous damage it did. Ship was lucky to survive.

I note all of FR’s subvets are silent, I’m going quiet too.
I believe none if the events reported in the papers.

With all three of them relieved I’m guessing this was not an “unknown” seamount.

This after the brandon administration ran aground in uncharted voter fraud waters on Tuesday. Just goes to show that some stuf just ain’t on a chart or a meme.

True, but not sure having a 43 year old commanding a nuclear submarine is all that smart. Seems he was pushed up the ranks awfully quick.

Yes,that makes sense. Having just watched (for the 10th time) The Hunt for Red October the other day you'd think I would have figured that out on my own!
