Training exercises give valuable lessons and experience. They reveal flawed doctrine and training gaps.

In this case the exercise may also have proven the value of a new doctrine.

Like the WW2 wargaming of anti-sub warfare, or the way the Prussians used Kriegspiel to model their extraordinarily decisive war with the French.

In any case, no-one should feel sore about it. It’s not a ‘British victory’, it’s a win for everybody involved. Learn the lesson(s), come back stronger.

The enemy will probably wait until our admirals and generals are painting their fingernails.

All this assumes that the leadership is willing to learn from this exercise, and what it will learn.

This is a military leadership that is still taking credit for a successful withdrawal from Afghanistan.
