Doesn’t the majority party vote for who they want in that spot? If so, how does a GOP nob get it?

Defeating the Senate President just makes you a Senator, not the Senate President. Anyway, I think the Democrats kept control of both houses of the NJ legislature. It is hard to figure out the new party breakdown from the news. The majority party picks the Senate President. A new senator who was a truck driver who did not campaign much is unlikely to get a leadership position.
