I see we are introduced to a new character, who will become General Rawlins. He will have a distinguished career, mostly intertwined with Grant's.

The city of Rawlins, Wyoming, was named for him.

The Wyoming State Pen. is in Rawlins. The old Territorial Prison, which once held Butch Cassidy, is in Laramie and is now open to tourists.

The landscape West of Rawlins turns bleak or beautiful, depending on one's point of view. The Red Desert is West of Rawlins.
