‘It was a classless move,’ Morningside coach says of Inglewood [CA] scoring 106 points
Los Angeles Times ^ | October 30, 2021 | ERIC SONDHEIMER

Inglewood Morningside football coach Brian Collins did not have kind words for the Inglewood High coaching staff on Saturday morning when discussing his team’s 106-0 loss to the Sentinels in a game that saw Inglewood quarterback Justyn Martin throw 13 touchdowns passes, including a two-point conversion pass with a 104-0 lead.

Collins said he was proud of his players for not quitting. He said a running clock did not start until the second quarter despite attempts to switch to a running clock earlier. Inglewood led 59-0 after the first quarter.

Inglewood head coach Mil’Von James is in his third season. He was head coach at Hawkins in the City Section until being fired following the 2016 season when his team had to forfeit every victory for using ineligible players and the program was placed on two years’ probation for rules violations. He has seven players on this year’s team committed to major universities. All are transfer students.

Both schools are part of the Inglewood Unified School District. A statement released by the Southern Section on Saturday “condemns, in the strongest terms, results such as these.”

This isn’t the first time a district team has come under scrutiny for running up a score.

In 1990, Morningside’s Lisa Leslie scored 101 of her team’s 102 points in the first half of a girls’ basketball game against South Torrance. South Torrance refused to come back out after halftime to finish the game. The final score was 102-24.

But if the superior team doesn’t score and the simply toy with them, that can be insulting too.

Oh yeah. THAT ticked me off. I’d rather get the opportunity to figure out how to overcome their tactic or strength.

Practicing your 2-point plays, and the defenders practicing their defense. That game had been over and changed to a scrimmage for a long time.

Red Grange said, “There are a lot of things you can learn out on a football field. You learn how to take a good licking and not cry about it, and you learn how to hand one out and not go around bragging about it.”

Going for 2 when you are up 104-0 is classless and frankly mean spirited. If the goal was to illustrate what bad sportsmanship looks like, mission accomplished.

"But no one complained about it. It was a learning experience."

its a learning experience until someone gets hit by a far bigger guy and is paralyzed from the neck down....

no it is never alright to humiliate a lesser team just because you can.....

that is not sporting, and that is not learning....

I think they mentioned going to a “running clock” to shorten the game. Normally the clock stops briefly after first downs to move the stakes, or and incomplete pass. Part of the problem seemed to be technical because that didn’t happen as soon as it should have. 13 TD’s in a game where the quarters are only 12 minutes? Must have scored on almost every offensive possession.

Since the starting quarterback had already committed to playing for UCLA, you don't leave him in the entire game and risk a career ending injury.........

At some point the second string QB should have taken his place.....

Never heard of a running clock before. When was such a thing conceived of? I’m not doubting you, just haven’t kept up with HS sports.

Where I grew up, it was called the mercy rule.

I didn’t know that. My boys played long ago and I haven’t kept up with the changes. I can see where such a rule would be acceptable for very young kids.
I’ve learned something new today.

Same here, we was a 3-A population having to play in a 5=A Division.

In Ohio it was added in 2014. And it appears it was in play here as the coach in the article referred to wanting the “running clock” to be instityted early.

Well, that’s my job.

How would you figure out how to overcome their tactics or strengths if they were not playing their real game but but some halfass out of pity for you?

Strawman argument.

We lost a player to paralysis my sophomore year. he was a junior. It was against a team in the same division, same student population. A freak accident.

Getting trounced teaches you the world doesn’t owe you anything, and it shows you what excellence is.

If you don’t want to be humiliated, then don’t play, or don’t accept such a school on your schedule. It teaches you that if you want to slay giants, then you have to recruit like a giant, coach like a giant, and train like a giant.

In other words, you have to do all things that achieve excellence.

As Tom Brady once said about running up the score “it is not his job to play defense for the other team.” Playing at your best at all times is what drives job performance, contracts, raises, and bonuses. In high school, your overall rating in your position will reflect in individual acceptance to Colleges.
