[P]ushed about whether the United States would defend Taiwan from a Chinese attack, Biden added: "Yes. Yes, we have a commitment to do that."
The remark quickly made headlines, as the U.S. policy for decades has been one of "strategic ambiguity" toward how it would respond to such an attack. The 1979 Taiwan Relations Act commits the U.S. to support Taiwan, including providing it defensive capabilities, but not necessarily to engage in a military conflict.
After Biden’s remarks, the White House soon clarified the comment, and said the President was not abandoning strategic ambiguity.
A White House spokesperson told Fox News after the town hall that Biden "was not announcing any change in our policy and there is no change in our policy."

Last thing we need.
When China moves on Taiwan, even if Senile Joe wants to defend them, we won’t.
In all seriousness, I don’t think President Biden even understood what nation he was begin asked about.
It’s because Biden is senile and says things that are false and absurd.
He has said recently that the U.S. and Taiwan have a mutual defense treaty, which once was true but has not been true for more than 40 years (Jimmy Carter withdrew us).
He then said there is an agreement between the U.S. and the ChiComs that China won’t attack Taiwan and that Xi Jinping told him that China would abide by the agreement. This one was utter absurdity and delusion.
Now he says we have a commitment to defend Taiwan. Perhaps he meant his delusional treaty, he did not say what the commitment is.
There is no commitment.
A bright green light for the red Chinee.
This is Clueless Joe telling the ChiComs they still own him.
“There is no commitment.”
Joe can send troops if he decides to. He is the President until removed.
“Strategic ambiguity..”
What could possibly go wrong?

“There is no commitment.”

True. He can say he is committed to doing this.
But there is no US commitment to do it.
Biden could change his mind, a different president could decide not to etc..
Nothing commits the U.S. to defend Taiwan in the way the former mutual defense treaty did.
Contrast to Japan where the US is committed to defend Japan.
strategic ambiguity.
I’d say Brandon is the very picture of strategic ambiguity,
or maybe that’s ambiguious strategery!!!
My point is that if in Joe’s mind we are committed, we could very well be committed if something happens unless he is removed.
Also, while the “official” policy is no commitment, whose to say there is not a secret commitment that Joe mistakenly leaked?
I confess have no idea what will happen.
It could show the existence of a healthy debate within the administration, or it could show they’re a bunch of effin’ incoherent idiots. Can’t decide which
“My point is that if in Joe’s mind we are committed, we could very well be committed if something happens unless he is removed.”
I understood your point and didn’t mean to make you think I didn’t or disagree. I agree. It’s weird, I actually like Biden saying these things.
I’m just pointing out Biden is saying things not true.
“Also, while the “official” policy is no commitment, whose to say there is not a secret commitment that Joe mistakenly leaked?”
This is also true. This relates most to his comments about Xi Jinping agreeing to abide by their agreement. I do think there may be an agreement such as you mention whereby if Taiwan does not “declare independence” and China attacks that the U.S. will defend Taiwan. But not if Taiwan “declares independence”, which I think is a bad agreement. If there is such an agreement it is not official.
“I confess have no idea what will happen.”
No one does.
#3. Remember, this is a neo-marixst/Democrat/Progressive administration which means it will continue to sell out our friends and allies, treaties or not.
FDR: Kept European Jewish refugees from coming (with exceptions) to America for asylum (and also from coming to Cuba esp re the SS St. Louis)
FDR: Gave the Russians more of Europe than they could have any legal claim to.
FDR: Wouldn’t clean the Reds/CPUSAers and NVKD/GPU agents out of Congress and his administration/agencies
Truman: Didn’t fight the Korean War to win (but at least he kept So. Korea free.
JFK and LBJ. Started the sell out of So. Vietnam, Laos and eventually Cambodia which resulted in the genocide of up to 2 million Cambodians (including people I knew), over 85,000 SVN officials, soldiers, medical personnel, religious leaders and minor political party leaders/followers, plus over an estimated 100,000 - 500,000 “boat people who died at sea (Sen. Kennedy, McGovern and Church were the key leading traitors on this betrayal).
Carter: Didn’t do a damned thing to free our people held prisoner in Iran except get some commandos and pilots killed in the stupidest raid plan I’ve ever seen for a prisoner rescue.
Bill Clinton: Set the stage for 9/11 to happen after not taking the bombings of two US embassies in Africa seriously or of the first bombing attack on the World Trade Center. Stood down our airborne alert system so that NO jet aircraft could get near any of the 9/11 hijacked planes in time to shoot them down.
Too much partying with interns and Red Chinese money for Al Gore and the Clintons to do anything.
Obama - sold out Iraq, allowed the growth of ISIS and its genocide plus spreading around the world, sold out Israel and the non-Hezbollah/Iran people of Lebanon, and did little to stop the slaughter in Syria where we had allies.
Obama - curried up to Communist Cuba, abandoned the people of Venezuela to Marxist tinhorn dictators, and didn’t help the people of Nicaragua regain their lawful democratic leadership via free elections.
Biden - Lost our influence and people in Afghanistan, taking Obama-style anti-Israel stances/moves, taking money from Red China. doing nothing about stopping RC’s chemical/biological warfare plans and facilities, plus the COVID epidemic which they “owned” one way or the other.
And now the issue of helping to protect the ROC/Taiwan, and even the Philippines.
Doing almost nothing to stop the flow of Red Chinese fentanyl into the US (our Border Patrol, DEA, etc are but have been crippled by Biden and his maoist clique of advisors and appointees); not making our borders safe and closed to illegal invaders; not punishing American leftist groups who aid and abet the drug and human traffickers, and reward illegals with more benefits than the average American who is out of work gets.
None Dare Call It Treason, but I do!!
Chavez came to power during GWB’s term.
Both Bush Presidents left the border wide open, the second one after we were attacked.
Assistant Democrats are no better than Democrats.
