he shouldn’t be out begging for money. He should go into treatment or have a custodian

Really? You will give him the money and service that the VA does not provide to hire a “custodian”? How do you know what his disability payment is just by looking at an statistical average? Like many vets who get almost nothing? He’s homeless for a reason, and now a candidate for suicide.
Ever been in combat and suffered from PTSD as a result? Thought not. Lots of guys who served suffer in the silence of PTSD. Try it some time. Read the “The Solitary World of A Vet - When We Came Home” online somewhere for further enlightenment as to what happens to many of those who serve.
In many states and towns, 3K a month barely covers rent, with enough left over for coffee and a donut.
Do yourself a favor and stop looking for things to be outraged about. It makes you look silly.
He’s got service connected PTSD. Meaning, he is paid for it. The average payment for service connected PTSD is 70% connection. The fact that he was given a dog by the VA, means he is very likely to be 100% service connected.
Where this incident occurred, one can live surprisingly well on $3k a month. Especially if he comes down a little ways to SC.
I’ve said nothing to minimize his sacrifices, nor do I begrudge him his benefits at all. However,I do happen to have a lot of experience in this area. More than you do from reading a book, I assure you. If the man is panhandling, he likely has some issues that need addressing like substance abuse. The guy needs help and probably someone to manage his money, so he can’t spend it on things he shouldn’t.
