Ambushed hunter kept his composure after Wyo. grizzly mauling
Billings Gazette ^ | 27 Oct 2021 | David Peck Lovell

He and his hunting partner killed the attacking bear, but only after the bear tore his thumb from his left hand.

Dickson said he almost always sees grizzlies when he hunts along the North Fork of the Shoshone River — just not that close.

He and his hunting partner, a man named John, were even scanning for bears while hunting elk — just in case.

. On the day of the surgery, the couple was told there was an equal chance of losing the thumb or keeping it. “He said, ‘Don’t get attached to it, but it could stay,’” When we stopped, that’s when the bear came over the top of the ridge. We were probably 15 or 20 yards off the top of the ridge on the west side.

The experienced hunter always carries a 10mm handgun in a holster across his chest, but before he could reach it, the bear knocked him down.

“When I fell down, my left arm came up, and that’s when she got a hold of my hand,” Dickson said. “I was on my right side with my left side up. The guy that was with me, when that bear was on top, that’s when he shot that bear. He was probably only 20 yards behind me.”

Fortunately, his friend’s aim was true, and he hit the grizzly with a .300 Winchester Magnum just behind the shoulder. The wounded bear then turned on John, which gave Dickson the time to get up, get his pistol out and shoot the bear with the 10mm. The bear dropped, and a couple more shots from the rifle made sure the bear was dead.

Sometimes the bear wins.

Sometimes it only gets a piece.

It can be a rough world beyond the perimeter of the Capitol.

...On the day of the surgery, the couple was told ...

Why is the Billings Gazette trying to make this sound like Brokeback Mountain?

Only one man of the hunting partners got his thumb tore off--not a "couple".

AA Beowulf AR-.50 cal 425cal FMJ wins everytime. Carry it on a sling so you don’t lean it against at tree/rock, and can’ get to it. Been there and done that, once. Dropped a 700lb Grzz with my weapon, 2 shots, back in 2015.

I'm not a hunter, but I would think that after you've shot an elk, and the elk is now lying dead on the ground, the scene might attract the attention of one or more grizzlies even if they normally didn't come that close.

I mean, just thinking it out into the future a bit.

I mean, how does one get a dead elk out of the woods? Don't they weigh up to a thousand pounds or so?

Great story.

The Grizzly hunted them.

The Bear Cult will say "she was protecting her cubs". Not in any rational sense of the word or world.

The bear should never have been in human territory.

You should post about it. You know a useful vanity. I personally would love to hear the tale.

Th smell of gunpowder, testosterone, manliest keeps Grizs away. Unfortunately the fags, cross dressers and gender confusion crowd keep feeding the grizs.

Hunters don’t leave dead elk out overnight.

I’ve read many Griz attack accounts and the one thing they seem to have in common is they attack from the rear.

The term “couple” was referring to the man and his wife at the hospital, not to the hunting partners.

Not clear in the excerpt.

I actually assumed it was a husband and wife. Never thought otherwise. My comment was more focused on our new term obsession on tras everything. I thought it funny to thinking about the queer bear huggers. Crazy. I know I’m getting old.

The dead elk was not where the attack happened.

Right, I get that, but as a general observation, hunting elk where grizzly bears are plentiful seems like it could lead to some dicey situations.

I mean, what if there are more grizzlies than there are hunters? If you drop one grizzly, do the others make themselves scarce?

If you have to field-dress the elk to get it out, wouldn't that lead to some confrontations?

Takes two horses, half the meat on each plus one carries the head and cape. Or two trips.
