The Braves in the 90’s. I’ve never seen such an incredible pitching staff. They were always contenders during that stretch.

IMO, pitching is the key to baseball.

Last comment before I go to bed.

Everything else aside, I think the Braves will lose because of that stupid pearl necklace that Joc Pederson wears. I think it makes him (and Atlanta) look idiotic.

See ya.

Houston still needs some punishment for its cheating.

It's a pretty poorly kept secret in MLB that all teams steal signals. Houston did indeed get caught. They got sloppy.

“...It’s a pretty poorly kept secret in MLB that all teams steal signals...”
-
Yeah, all teams mount a secret closed circuit camera in center field
zoomed in on the catcher,
with a live feed to the clubhouse,
where analysts decipher signs
and then bang on trash can lids to signal the batter,
and then when MLB investigates,
lose their general manager, Luhnow,
their manager, Hinch,
and their bench coach, Cora,
and get fined $5 million,
and forfeit their first and second-round draft picks for 2 years,
-
Yeah, that stuff just happens every day...

They were a little to brazen in their method. I agree. That's what made it pretty sloppy. But the MO doesn't really matter. They all do it whether you want to admit it or not. At that level of competition they all look for an edge...legal or not.

Another MVP athlete in a different sport summed it up this way. "If you're not cheating, you're not trying."

I have a family member who played for the Braves back in the day. We went to a lot of games, and I met people like Dusty Baker, Hank Aaron (who signed a ball for me), and Phil Niekro.

Earlier today, I was talking about 'Chief Noc-A-Homa'.

“I’m torn between hating Dusty Baker and wanting him to win one anyway for some reason.”

_______________

I feel the same way. I think that Dusty Baker is the dumbest manager since Bobby Cox, and blame him for the Cubs inability to during the years in which he managed the team (and for years thereafter, since he destroyed the right arms of Mark Prior and Kerry Wood and got rid of several promising young players). But I also think that he’s a nice guy, someone with deep love and appreciation for the game, and a tragic figure for whom a World Series victory in his 70s would be joyful beyond words.

While part of me wishes that he didn’t win the World Series because it likely would lead to his election to the Hall of Fame despite being unworthy of induction, my brain tells me that it wouldn’t make a difference in the long run, because he’s going to get inducted into the “Harold Baines Wing” of the HOF anyhow. (Impy, that dig at the White Sox was only partly gratuitous. : )

BTW, I actually met Dusty when I was a ten-year-old kid. I went to a baseball (day) summer camp, and Dusty was a guest instructor for a day (he was near the end of his very successful run as the Dodgers’ left fielder). The one thing that he taught us that I still remember was to fold up my glove as if it was a triptych instead of folding it as it was a taco. What we should avoid, Dusty explained, was having a glove that was flat (and thus harder to open and close), and he took the glove from one of the kids and mocked it for looking and feeling like a pancake. That definitely changed the way that I worked in, and stored, gloves from then onwards.

Some trivia: Dusty Baker, who won his only Gold Glove in 1981, was the only primary left fielder to win an NL Gold Glove Award between 1961 and 1989. (Wally Moon won a Gold Glove as the Dodgers’ LF in 1960, and Barry Bonds won the first of his eight Gold Gloves in 1990.)

Thanks - I’m a Houston native living about an hour away in a rural, unincorporated area.

Go Stros!

It’s literally 47 states to 3 for the Astros. We like being the underdog.

Bobby Cox knew that, too. The Braves came so close so many times. They deserved a World Series win back then. I'm glad they are there again now, but to be honest, I dont even follow sports anymore.

I'm rooting for the Braves for no other reason than to stick it up the MLB Commissioner's ass for pulling the all star game from ATL.

The Twins did that twice, winning games 1, 2, 6, and 7 at home in 1987 against the Cardinals and again in 1991 against the Braves.

The 2019 Nationals are the only team to win the World Series by winning four games on the road (again, 1, 2, 6, and 7.)

Now, what is the tie (tenuous) between the Twins and the Nationals?

The Braves had their own cheating scandal, of a different sort.

Stealing signs is not illegal.

It's the way you steal signs that makes it illegal.
