A 69-year-old Las Vegas woman is accused of defrauding Social Security for years after she allegedly dismembered her dead husband’s body and threw his remains in the trash, according to a federal criminal complaint.

Survivor’s benefits for Shedleski in 2019 if her husband’s death has been reported would have been $14,000, but her husband’s benefits that were distributed that year totaled $24,000, the complaint said.

The complaint said her husband last received medical care in 2015 at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Jefferson Hills, which is near Pittsburgh.

Her court-appointed defense lawyer, Wendi Overmyer, did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment on behalf of her client.

Now she gets free housing and medical care.

It’s not a great option, but it is an option.

How does this work when the dependent spouse outlives the one that paid into SS?

The surviving spouse gets to claim either person’s SS, but not both. So, assuming the husband made more money and put more into SS than the wife, when either one of them dies the wife’s SS stops and the husband’s SS continues, even if the survivor is the wife.

“The surviving spouse gets to claim either person’s SS, but not both.”

Only up to 50% of other’s SS.

Now that I'm getting old enough to worry about how Social Security works, I have a 300-page book that explains all the labyrinth rules governing Social Security. It's great for falling asleep with.

The government has ways of making things that should be simple and straightforward extremely complicated.

So another 800 bucks or so a month, yea I can see why she did it. /s

My mother collects the full amount of my late father's SS.

Maybe there are other rules. Like the fact that my mother was already collecting SS too when he died (meaning she has to be old enough to collect and also has to have put a lot into it herself to get more than just 50% of her husband's SS).

Or maybe the rule you site is a new rule for future retirees, but the rule I'm familiar with was grandfathered in for existing retirees.

Reminds me of an old Gahan Wilson cartoon. The cop is telling the Mrs. she can’t get rid of him that easy and the old man is in a garbage can.

Meanwhile, there are millions of active social security numbers for individuals over the age of 112, despite the fact there are less than 30 living people (worldwide) who are that old or older.

Glad they caught this fraudster, but it’s a drop in the ocean compared to the massive fraud that pervades the social security system. Millions of illegals are using the SSAN of long-dead Americans to work and receive other benefits, while thousands keep collecting checks of relatives long after they die.

In one case, the Social Security Administration thought one beneficiary was still alive and collecting a monthly check at the age of 17. They subsequently discovered his son had been cashing the check for 35 years after his father died and only detected the fraud after the younger man passed away.

It’s designed that way so society can be manipulated and controlled.
