Alec Baldwin failed to follow the No. 1 rule of gun safety before the fatal shooting on the set of “Rust,” a Hollywood weapons expert tells The Post.
“Loaded or unloaded, a weapon never gets pointed at another human being,” said Bryan Carpenter, who heads Dark Thirty Film Services.
Even on a film or TV set, he said “you never let the muzzle of a weapon cover something you don’t intend to destroy.”
The prop gun had misfired twice on Oct. 16 and once the week before, according to the Los Angeles times, and union workers said the “Rust” set had been plagued by safety issues, prompting them to walk out in the hours ahead of the tragic shooting.

“Nonetheless,” Carpenter said, the weapon handled by Baldwin was “obviously pointed at another human being.”
The weapons consultant cited what he called “Colonel Jeff Cooper’s four fundamentals” of gun safety.
“All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are,” reads the No. 1 rule by Cooper, an influential gun safety expert who died in 2006.
While news reports call the firearm a “prop” weapon, Carpenter said the label can be misleading. Some movie-set firearms are “true” props made of rubber. But others, like the one used on the set of “Rust,” are capable of deadly force.
The consultant also said that for safety purposes live firearms used in TV and movie productions are typically aimed at a dummy point, not at equipment, cast or crew members, as was the case with the weapon handled by Baldwin.

“Sounds more like a semi-auto to me out here in fly-overville.”
Really.
“There’s that little thing called the “hammer”.”
Which is not a safety device!
“I read yesterday that Baldwin is a co-producer on this film.”
He was sole producer.
FACT
No one needs a high capacity machine gun which is what a Colt’s Model 1873 Single Action Army is - especially if it’s black!
Billy the Kid favored a Colt Thunderer which is a double action
Blanks can kill at close range especially if its a large caliber gun. The wadding in the blank and the gas being expelled is dangerous.

“Regardless of who prepared the weapon and handed it to him, Alec Baldwin aimed it and pulled the trigger. There is no escaping that fact.”
I’m pretty sure I would have checked. Yakima Canutt, Slim Pickens, Lee Marvin, Duke, Senta Berger, all would have checked.
Especially a revolver.
I think there’s a good chance that someone was plinking with that gun, maybe the day before or early in the morning, and left a live round chambered.
“Billy the Kid favored a Colt Thunderer which is a double action”
Marketing fiction.
“I think there’s a good chance that someone was plinking with that gun, maybe the day before or early in the morning, and left a live round chambered.”
The lady killed posted about going out in horseback. I would bet some took Guns.
The armorer posted lots of photos with Guns.
Took the guns with live rounds to protect against coyotes and rattlesnakes, etc. while horseback riding and imbibing alcohol. The alcohol part could could set up the “stupid” like forgetting to take the live rounds out.
I’d bet a twenty on that...
All he needed was one experienced cowboy action shooter who needed a couple extra bucks or a line of dialogue. They would have been familiar with the firearms and have rigid safety protocols.
One major rule is never hand dangerous weapons to arrogant Leftists.
From a Brit paper:
“Hannah Gutierrez Reed, 24, was the armorer on the set of Rust, which has since suspended production in New Mexico after the fatal shooting on Thursday of Halyna Hutchins.
Ms Reed is the daughter of longtime Hollywood armorer Thell Reed.”
I find it hard to believe that Thell Reed’s daughter was unfamiliar with guns. He was one of the top fast draw shooters in the 60’s and was part of the group, along with Jeff Cooper and Roy Weaver, that helped pioneer the “modern technique” of the pistol. Weird....
Wrong.
The responsibility for firearm safety lies with the one who handles the firearm, and ultimately with the one who pulled the trigger.
Heck, not just one SASS shooter but with a posse as well, with period costumes and all who would have been happy for walk on parts in crowd scenes. Housing? They got their own RVS. Probably would have been stricter enforcing safety protocols as well.
“I find it hard to believe that Thell Reed’s daughter was unfamiliar with guns.”
One thing to be familiar with Guns.
Another to be a young, inexperienced ‘enforcer’ working under a renown star that cares more about money than safety.
Good point.
That given, I believe she was more ego than enforcer.
