10 horror movies set in Maine that aren’t based on Stephen King books

You might think that every horror movie set in Maine is, by default, based on a Stephen King work, just based on sheer numbers of films made and their box office take. But there are plenty of scary movies set in Maine that have nothing to do with King’s works — some of which were actually filmed in the state, to boot. Here’s a list of some of the films, from wacky B-movies to modern-day horror classics.

‘Prophecy’ (1979)

This creature feature, directed by John Frankenheimer, tells the ridiculous story of an environmental scientist and his wife (Robert Foxworth and Talia Shire), who investigate reports of toxic waste being dumped into a river in Maine. They eventually realize that the pollution has caused local animals and plants to mutate and grow to huge sizes — most notably, a bear who runs amok in the wilderness and is nicknamed “Katahdin” by the local Native American tribe. Racial insensitivity notwithstanding, the film was panned when it was released, but has since grown to be a bit of a cult classic.

Filmed in Maine? No.

Prophecy was a book written by David Seltzer -the same guy who wrote The Omen.

I have both the book and DVD. Reccommended.

There’s a scene in the Lighthouse were Dafoe does this epic and deranged sailor’s cursing monologue for what seemed like a few minutes straight. I think it’s because the other lighthouse tender doesn’t like the way he cooks the meals.

I swear its something like boiled lobster and beans in the same pot. There’s also a lot of farting in this movie.

The first book of his I read was Salem's Lot, and I think the next was The Shining. I got them through the Doubleday Book Club I belonged to at that time. I went on to read Cujo, Carrie, and some others like Delores Claiborne, Tommyknockers, The Stand, It, and Rose Madder, but haven't read any of his stuff for many years now. About the closest I get to "horror" these days is Doug Preston, and Lincoln Child's "Agent Pendergast" series that started with "The Relic," that was made into a movie in 1997. Most of the books I read tend to be non-fiction history books. We live in a world of horror these days, so no need to read fictional horror very often.

Living Deb comes in second to Shaun of the Dead, but still...

Another one to see is Juan of the Dead (2011)
“Juan of the dead, we kill your beloved ones, how can I help you?”
English subs of course. I am really surprised they filmed this in Cuba.

Lucky them. They just pulled a 650 pound gator from the backwaters about 15 minutes from here. Nasty buggers, and they’re everywhere around here.
