A robot dog design armed with a 6.5 mm Creedmoor sniper rifle capable of precisely hitting targets from 3,940 feet away has been unveiled at the US Army trade show.
The 'Special Purpose Unmanned Rifle' (SPUR) is the brainchild of Philadelphia-based Ghost Robotics and arms manufacturer SWORD International of Sparks, Nevada.
Placed on top of one of Ghost Robotics' existing 'quadrupedal unmanned ground vehicle' designs, SPUR can be remotely instructed to load, unload and fire its rifle.
The firms have yet to reveal the exact configuration of the weapon, nor how much ammunition the machine is capable of carrying or its reload rate.
However, tests have shown that the 6.5mm rounds used in the Creedmoor rifle offer an increase in range over the 7.62x51mm cartridges currently used by US forces.
It is also presently unclear how much each robot unit and SPUR attachment will cost to purchase and maintain.
The arming of robots with SPUR — while arguably an inevitable development not that distinct from other unmanned ground weapons — is still likely to stir up controversy.
In contrast, for example, competitor Boston Dynamics — known for their oft-dancing robot dog 'Spot' — have committed to never arming any of their bots with weapons.
And the prospect of weaponised robot dogs turning on and killings humans was brought to discomforting life in the 2017 Black Mirror episode 'Metalhead'.

We are entering an age where the ordinary person has very little power against a robotic military machine.
The robotic machine may be controlled by smaller and smaller numbers of people.
Eventually, only a tiny number of people will be needed to operate it; eventually maybe one.
Then... no humans necessary?
For the next couple of decades, the factoryies making them are still vulnerable, at least to kinetic strikes from space...
In the Year 2525,
If man is still alive,
If woman can survive,
They may find...

Hacking. Biden probably handed over the technical data to his buddies in China and Iran for purchase of two paintings of Cunter.
Drone with a blanket or a bucket of paint.
Hide until they pass??
Very easily, the same way you get close to any enemy who can outrange you with a direct fire weapon. You use terrain masking and cover to get very close and flank them while your buddy tries to fix them from the front from good cover.
The 260 in it’s 1970s factory twist rate is slow to stabilise the long heavy VLD bullets that make the 6.5mm caliber the go to long distance bullet. Short of specialty very heavy long range firearms such as the 338 lapua or the 50 BMG all three will shoot supersonic past 1600 meters the 6.5s do it in a short throw rifle under 20 lbs. Modern 6.5s have 1:7 twists more than enough to shoot long 140+gr VLD bullets something a 260 cannot do for two reasons the twist rate is first and the second is the case is the wrong neck angle and depth. If you try to seat a heavy VLD bullet into a 260 you have to seat it so deep it takes up powder space and getting a crimp is nearly impossible up on the ogive of the bullet the shank is now too deep in the case. The creedmore case is set up form the get go to hold VLD on the shank while having a blown out case and hard neck angle like all modern cases. There are better 6.5s the king of the hill for long distance competition work is the 6.5/284 it pushes a 140gr8 VLD 250 fps faster than the creed. Paired with a 1:6 barrel it will reach 2000+ meters with ease. The 6.5/06 also sends the mail one mile plus again you need a custom 1:6 twist and 26”+ barrel pacnor makes them in 5R rifling even.
Thanks for the detailed explanation. That makes a lot of sense. Long live the 6.5 Creed then. I am a fan of 6.5. I think it is the perfect blend of recoil and performance.
Asimov is rolling in his grave.
The best part is that, for the first time in history, we built something that can't be hacked. Ever.
Yup.
Should have called the weapon platform CUR.

” I am a fan of 6.5. I think it is the perfect blend of recoil and performance.”
I am also a “6.5 fan”. I rebarreled my Rem 700SA to 6.5x47 Lapua and I built my first AR15 in 6.5 Grendel.
Fear not.
They would require charging stations/maintenance.
12 year old hackers could be employed to turn them on their masters.
True.
Plus, they do look a little flimsy.
How the heck did you deal with the overpressure??? Is rebarreling all that was needed?
Can I get one of these to go deer hunting for me....save a lot of ammunition!!!
The dog model requires a great deal of maintenance and constant power usage for balance.
