As FreedomPoster noted, this is probably just another example of woke journalism. Using gender-specific pronouns like “his” or “her” is now discouraged, if not outright prohibited.

Possibly in this instance the journalists were concerned about gender confusion and used “their” rather than ‘his/her’.

Pronouns aren’t needed.
