I was big on nicknames as a teacher, and most of the kids enjoyed it. Every ‘Amber’ became ‘Tree Sap’. But with black kids with exotic names...you never know if you’re crossing an invisible red line. Have to get to know them better.

Had a Megan in class, so I started calling her ‘Meggers’. A sweet black kid, who was slow, heard me and said “I’m one of those!” with a big smile. Had to quickly tell him that I had said ‘Meggars’, not what he thought. When he graduated we were all surprised to learn that his middle name was something like Lil’Juan.
