Minnesota Supreme Court denies Chauvin public defender request

The Minnesota Supreme Court has denied former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin's request for a public defender.

The request is related to his expected appeal of his conviction in George Floyd's murder.

Court documents show Chauvin was denied representation by a public defender on Sept. 14 and then appealed that denial to the Minnesota Supreme Court.

At the time he appealed the denial, Chauvin stated his debts exceed his assets, leaving him to represent himself because he wouldn't be able to cover attorney's fees.

According to the state Supreme Court, a defendant would be unable to obtain private counsel if he or she would be unable to pay through any combination of liquid assets and income.

"Having reviewed Chauvin's request, the information provided regarding his assets and debts, and the OMAPD's (Minnesota Appellate Public Defender) determination, we conclude that Chauvin has not established that he is entitled to appointed representation at this time," the state's Supreme Court order reads.

Though the state Supreme Court denied the request, it stated there is a possibility for Chauvin to file a future request if it's determined, at any stage of the proceedings, that he is financially unable to pay for retained counsel.

I thought that public defenders were for everyone, even the wealthy. However, the wealthy could choose private representation to get a better lawyer.

I thought all he had to do was ask. He’s in jail. Out of job, the PD union won’t support him.

You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you

This should go to the United States Supreme Court. They cannot deny him the right to councel. The United States Supreme Court will allow him councel for sure. That will show the Minnisota Supreme Court for what it is, a kangaroo court.

This is REALLY bad. Having your right to a fair trial and legal council stripped. A fundamental right for any US citizen. This sets a dangerous precedent and displays an arrogance we’re witnessing far too often.

You think that is bad? Hundreds of people are being held in DC jail for misdemeanor charges & have been for over six months. Many in solitary confinement.

It was an insurrection, don't ya know?

I've seen rowdier high school field trips.

Being denied a lawyer, and getting convicted, should allow him to go free in wrongful conviction, since his constitutional right to defense was denied.

Minnesota is one of the dirtiest vote-rigging states in the country.

A 55 by 70 mile rectangle centered on Minneapolis-St. Paul rigs all the state-wide "elections".

That tells you all you need to know about the political pieces of Mitt behind this decision about Chauvin. They should be dangling from trees and lampposts themselves.

The fix was ALWAYS in, The rats bury their own, he at one time was a prominent figure in the police union. Look what that got him, they turned their backs and let him rot. Just wait until the other trials happen. They’re be railroaded too.

Yes. The Rubicon was crossed some time ago. You best be more concerned with you and your family's survival than the USA as a republic. It's done. Put a fork in it.

Not only are we being screwed, but all of those who lost their lives and fortunes in founding and defending our former republic are being shat on also. What a god awful waste of good lives.
