A hotel in the eastern German city of Leipzig was facing accusations of antisemitism on Tuesday after a musician said he was denied service for wearing a Star of David.
The video sparked sharp criticism from Germany’s Jewish communities and drew the attention of police.
In a video posted on social media, German musician Gil Ofarim said he attempted to check in to the Hotel Westin in Leipzig on Monday evening. Ofarim, who is Jewish, was wearing a necklace with a Star of David pendant.
Due to technical issues with the hotel’s computers, a long line had formed at the reception. Ofarim noticed that others in the line were waved forward, but he was not called up.
“What’s going on? Why is everyone else being called up ahead of me?” Ofarim says he asked the worker behind the desk.
The hotel employee then told him they were trying to reduce the line, but did not acknowledge that Ofarim was also standing in line.
“Then someone called out from the corner: ‘Put your star away,’” the singer says.
Ofarim said that the hotel worker then repeated the call for Ofarim to remove or hide his Star of David, saying that “once you put it away, then you can check in.” A visibly upset Ofarim ends the video with the words: “Germany, 2021.” …

What the clerk did (at the front desk) was simply observing he had the Star of David on, and responded to the guest that in public around Leipzig....it’s not wise to walk with this on.
For the benefit of folks...Leipzig (city of 600k) is a region with a fair number of left-wing hyped-up people, and a fair number of right-wing hyped-up people. There’s various things that you could wear on a Friday night out in the city...which would trigger people to either insult or assault you. The clerk merely offered advice (my humble opinion).
It’d be the same way if you came to Frankfurt as a guest, and asking about walking around the train station district, and I’d tell you that it’s not a place to hang out....especially in evening hours. I’d also tell you not to loiter even in morning/afternoon hours...just too many junkies looking for a way to rob you.
YHWH (sorry I can’t pronounce that) may know, but when Einstein left Germany, because he didn’t like what the Nazis were doing, maybe that made him one of the smarter ones.
My husbands father German American fought the Nazis in WWII. Shot down over Switzerland, POW…escaped and met up with free French to fight and support allied troops.
He was a very proud American….hated the Nazis and their attrocities.
Not all German people follow and support this disgusting antisemitism.

In Leipzig, you can count on skinheads, Nazi-lite types, real-Nazis, and AfD folks. Some still have a anti-Jew slant on things. But from the left side, you have radical environmentalists, Antifa, Marxists, etc. Some of this is purely university-related, and some is working-class socializing.
I should also note that you have various Muslim groups in the region, and some of those are anti-Jew.
Two years ago, the city finally got around to renovation of a ‘quarter’ on the south side of the town. Revolutionary types from the university had a lot of housing in this suburb, and were infuriated that the ‘character’ of the neighborhood was being raised up. They organized and conducted damage on the renovation sites. Police patrols had to be improved to prevent destruction of the construction projects.
Lot of history and draws tourism, but it’s one of those German towns where you pay attention to your surroundings. Probably one of a dozen towns where you need to think about things ahead of time.
The ones you seem to be calling “right wing” are on the left. There’s no such thing as a right-wing socialism; it’s an oxymoron. Even Goebbels called his party “the German Left”.

There have been a handful of lawsuits over issues like this in Europe. Usually they focus on Israelis since they stand out (passport) but in this case a Jewish star was enough.
I think some Israelis moved there because they can buy a Milki-brand pudding in a larger portion and for cheaper. Ach du Lieber!
Ladies and Gentlemen,
just would like to write a PS unter the whole affair: before court, it turned out that Mr. Ofarim had not told the truth.
He had misinterpreted the fact that, on that fateful evening, two regular guests were allowed to check in before him (a long line had formed at the check-in, due to a little rush).
This was not due to any “fault” on Mr. Ofarim’s part, it just so happened that both regulars were well-known to the entire hotel staff as regular guests, whereas Mr. Ofarim was a perfect stranger to the hotel.
Then, a second hotel receptionist, also well-acquainted with the aforementioned regular guests, happened by and saw them waiting in line and offered them a kind of “express check-in”.
Just because they were his long-time business acquaintances, not because of Mr. Ofarim’s faith.
Mr. Ofarim misinterpreted this friendly gesture of the receptionist towards his regular customers as an anti-semitic act. He filed a complaint against the second receptionist due to anti-semitic agitation. The case went to court.
To cut a long story short, the film material in the cameras was checked very thoroughly, and no less than thirty witnesses were interrogated by the judges. Nobody said that there had happened anything undue, and Mr. Ofarim had, as it turned out, kept his Star of David necklace under his jacket, so it was invisible.
So far, so good.
As Dr. Josef Schuster, the head of the Central Council of the Jews in Germany, had been saying after Mr. Ofarim’s video had gone viral in October, one should always be careful with prejudgements.
After all it is the task of the legal system, not the social media, to find out the truth.
That is what happened. It is possible that Mr. Ofarim might now, in his turn, be accused of slander by the receptionist, but I don’t think it will come that far. Rather, he might apologize to the receptionist, and the latter, if he is wise and good, will accept the apology.
Let us hope for the best.
