The private and personal information of over 1.5 billion Facebook users is being sold on a popular hacking-related forum, potentially enabling cybercriminals and unscrupulous advertisers to target Internet users globally.

This constitutes the biggest and most significant Facebook data dump to date.

It is seemingly unrelated to an earlier 2021 Facebook data dump, where 500 million users were affected.

Article author is indicating this is a probable fake and a scam, the seller is not even on the "darkweb", info not from a hack or leak but from open source snooping, has racked up at least 2 victims who claim they have paid and not received anything.

That’s true. I don’t know if it’s still true but I believe facebook and google and their ilk uses to sell people’s personal information. There were “data aggregators” who intentionally culled together as much information about people from their online accounts. As far back as the Cambridge-analytica scandal there were groups aggregating data on people for their political positions, mostly (they said) to target them with ads, but who knows what else they did or who else was aggregating people’s information in such ways.

Name, email, and gender? Psh. That’s child’s play

The question is... Who has the time to go through 1 billion names?

Privacy is dead... And has been for a very long time. The elimination or loss of privacy began slowly with census records. The doomsday book was the first of these compiled in 1086, but the modern day evolution of census records began in 1801 in the UK and spread from there to other colonies of the empire... And the United States started a census in 1841.

Since then, there truly has been no privacy. They recorded names, ages, jobs, salaries, colour, origins and in some censuses even the mental health of family members, etc. Add to that the requirement for marriage bonds, pre-1801 and then later marriage licenses and death certificates in the 19th century and who, what and where you were and are today is fully documented by the government.

It’s great if you’re interested in genealogy... You can trace most of your ancestors back to the early part of the 19th century because a lot of these records are digitized and available online. They typically wait until most of the people listed in these records are dead (or should be dead) before releasing them, but they are out there and you can’t do much about it. And even current census records are available to researchers.

So don’t worry about it... They know who you are, where you are and what you’re up to.

Still very helpful.

If, and I emphasize “if”, fb comes back, news of hacking will be on the minds of many otherwise would-be returnees.

FB is done, one way or another.

Well it’s obvious this is connected to the dirty laundry put out about FB.
No way that it’s coincidental

Facebook founder/CEO Mark Zuckerberg trusts his security and the internet so little he puts black tape over his laptop camera and microphone, for privacy and trade secret protection. That should tell us plenty. Yet of course, he wants the entire population to give him just about every piece of information about themselves as possible.

Yeah, like we know, it's all about perception. Though don't know how many people will see or know about this article besides us. Article's in an off-corner of the internet, by a guy I've never heard of until now.

The missus came to me this morning and said “the internet is down”. I said “if the internet is down, then why is your Netflix show streaming on your TV?”. I guess to her at this point, instagram is the internet.
