Former addict's astounding transformation to college graduate: 'Consider starting today'

Ginny Burton has been sober for nine years.

After struggling with drug addiction for most of her life, Burton got clean in 2012. The mom of three graduated from the University of Washington with her degree in political science in June.

In May, ahead of the ceremony, Burton, now 48, shared one of her graduation photos alongside a mug shot taken in 2005, during "one of the most intense times" of her addiction, Burton told Fox News, at a time when she "had a tremendous heroin habit" and was "smoking a lot of crack cocaine."

"I just thought that, besides the fact that there was such a vast contrast there and it just really for me, it just showed the depth of my journey in those two photos," Burton told Fox News.

As September's National Recovery Month comes to a close, Burton spoke with Fox News about her journey.

If it weren’t for the neck tattoo, I’d hardly believe it was the same gal. Good for her for getting her act together. Hope she can get that tat lasered off at some point.

For Burton, she continues to participate in Narcotics Anonymous and sponsors women who are also in recovery.

Based on my experience it requires a spiritual change to change ones life.

Narcotics Anonymous groups that are spiritually based are excellent. Ones that are based on good deeds become havens for predators.

This article leaves out her spiritual journey.

Good for her for rebuilding her life.

Good for her, certainly.

But many don’t realize how many college degrees today are given to those performing at the level of a marginal middle school student of a few decades ago.

Wow, good for her!

She looks almost dead in the first photo. Thanks be to God for her recovery from addiction. May she continue in her good health.

Folks, this is the case with the MyPillow owner, too.

It is absolutely beautiful to see what such reversals can lead to.

'Consider starting today'

Great! Just don't study "political science."

Very well done indeed! However it’s too bad she chose a worthless PolSci degree. (I made the same mistake early on.... The degree part, that is.)

It’s great to see a story like this. It’s not too often that happens. When I was in nursing school, one of my classmates started doing drugs, dropped out of school, borrowed money and mooched off of his family and friends until even his family did not want to have anything to do with him. At one point, I tried to help him get back into nursing school...brought him to the Student Nurses Association convention...on the way back, he lit up a crack or meth pipe in my car. I stopped and put him out on the side of the road and haven’t seen him since but heard through his uncle that he had HIV or AIDS...probably not the living at this point. I read a study on crack cocaine rehabilitation where they found that only 10% of crack addicts are able to stop permanently. The others keep relapsing.

“The mom of three graduated from the University of Washington with her degree in political science in June.”

Political science? She wasted four years of her life.

too bad her degree was in political science. that’s one of the most useless degrees on the planet. she’s probably deep in debt too.
