AT hikers adopt trail names so they end up being relatively anonymous. Plus hikers on the trail tend to not spend a lot of time watching the news.
There was a fugitive from Ohio who hiked the entire trail several times over his 8 years on the run.

Probably longer than in that swampy reserve in Florida.
But I doubt very long. So many people have said that he’s an ‘experienced outdoorsman’ - but that’s not the same as being a real wilderness survivalist. We armchair detectives haven’t seen much of him, but what I’ve seen hasn’t caused me to feel that he’s really got the inner stuff to last a long time in any kind of wilderness.
Unless he can manage to get to someplace where he can try pulling a ‘Christopher Knight’...
