BattlEye was another blocker for Proton, not working, despite so many popular online Windows games using it. Games that currently use BattlEye include (but not limited to):

This is a much more impactful announcement than it may seem. Gaming has been cited by those refusing to get off of big tech as a reason why they can't get off of big tech. Even among conservatives.

As a part-time online gamer, I
think this is referring to anti-cheat software that runs when you load games like War Thunder. There are hack programs for most games that allow the player to cheat by adding the ability to never miss, or have unlimited ammunition, or be able to see hidden players, etc.
Anti-cheat software is supposed to detect these cheat programs running on the PC and shut down the game.
It's a running battle between the cheat software and the anti-cheat software.
At least I think this is what the article is about.
