Baltimore Sun — Before heading out the door on the morning of Sept. 18, Victoria and Martin Olivier and their 4-year-old daughter struck a deal.
In exchange for good behavior during the family’s pharmacy visit for seasonal flu shots, Colette could expect a sugary treat in her future. So when the Walgreens pharmacist asked “Who wants to go first?” and Colette bravely sprang up to volunteer, her parents felt a wave of relief wash over them.
But relief soon gave way to panic when the pharmacist realized she injected Colette with a dose of the Pfizer vaccine, which is not yet authorized for children younger than 12.
Last week, Pfizer said it would seek clearance from federal regulators in the coming weeks for children to receive the shots — but only for a regimen of about a third of the dosage given to adults.
Olivier called the pharmacist’s admission of error a “record-scratch” moment that she feared could have dire implications for her daughter: Did Colette need to go to the hospital? Would she develop life-threatening side effects from the adult dose? Did they now need to schedule a second-dose appointment for her?
The Olivier family raced home and began digging through internet-based resources. A 24/7 nurse’s hotline and Poison Control yielded few answers. She turned to a robust network of social media friends for help.

I won’t be getting a flu vax this year because of this very risk.
Same here, don’t want any “mistakes”
I believe it after calling my pharmacy and asking when not so busy so I could get the flu shot. She went on and on about how busy they’ve been with covid ‘testing’ and covid shots and recommended I come in early evening.....not once did she recognize I was inquiring about the flu shot....even after I clarified it, she just went on about the covid.
Why does a 4 yr old even need a flu shot??? Wow these parents are just beyond stupid

I agree. Never again.
I don’t even know if I can trust our own family doctor. Putting off routine visits.
Our local medical center where I have been going for 40 years, told me at my annual physical that they no longer give flu shots, and recommended me to a local grocery pharmacy.
Why?
Cost savings.
They no longer have to keep it in stock and throw it out when past due date...................
Same here I’m having 2nd thoughts even though I’ll be a my doctor’s office....
I haven’t gone myself. I eat healthy, exercise, meditate, take supplements, and get plenty of rest though.
Be sure to ask to watch them draw into the syringe from the vial so you can see the label.
I went to pick up a prescription at CVS yesterday. There was a bunch of old farts with masks tightly glued on their faces all fighting over who was next in line for a flu or covid booster.
They were all told to make an appointment. I couldn’t wait to get the hell out of there.
People that just wanted a prescription have to wait a long time because of this silly hoopla.

Obvious med error for which there is no defense. They’ll be sued big.
Hard for me to see how you could make such an error when:
The pharmacists DUR will contraindicate the covid vaccine for a child
The covid vaccine is in a multidose vial, the flu vaccine comes in a pre packaged syringe
The covid vaccine comes out of a special freezer, the flu only requires normal refrigeration
This is not the first time I’ve heard of similar errors. Makes me think twice about getting the flu shot

I would never, ever allow my child to get either one!!

Sadly in the long term NOBODY knows the answer to that.
